I just purchased Lauren Myracle’s Shine. It was the least I could do.

The National Book Award is a big. stinking. deal. Seriously. Career-making huge. And Lauren Myracle was just nominated for one. Or was she? The NBA totally screwed the pooch because after apparently nominating her, they were all like “Oh, wait, our bad, someone said it over the telephone and we misheard it, she’s not actually nominated.”

So for a while they went ahead and left her on the ballot. Then they reneged. They *made her take her own book off the ballot.*

They didn’t even have the guts to just own their epic fail and just take it off, they made *her* resign it to “preserve the integrity” of the award.

How horrible.

And you know what, the integrity is already blown by what they did. Making her take it off only further breaks it.

In full disclosure, I share an agency with Lauren. But I didn’t even know that until after I purchased the book, already outraged at how she’d been treated.

Yes, I downloaded the book. Straight up. I don’t have time to read it forever. But come the fuck on. I can’t even imagine how fucking hurt I would be to have that done to me in public.

Just wow.
