Really? Snow?

March 31st 2011 at 10:57 am

I’m a bit put out by local weather conditions.

Nascence is live!

March 28th 2011 at 9:41 am

Nascence: 17 Stories That Failed and What They Taught Me is live and for sale. Here’s a taste of the very first review I’ve seen for it, by English prof and writer B.J. Keeton: In the time since I was sent the e-ARC of Nascence, I have learned more about what I am doing wrong [...]

Nascence: the reveal

March 25th 2011 at 3:56 pm

I promised I’d reveal what Nascence, this project I’ve been putting together over the last couple months, was about today: Here’s the full title: Nascence: 17 Stories That Failed and What They Taught Me. As I explain in the introduction, “…this is either a really clever way to monetize a number of old stories that [...]

The Little Guide to Un-Procrastination

March 24th 2011 at 1:42 pm

Leo Babuata has a new book out about Un-Procrastination. I’ve enjoyed his previous books about minimalism: This book will help you figure out why you procrastinate, what fears are stopping you, whether you’re really motivated to do what you know you should be doing — and how to address these issues. You’ll learn a simple [...]

The inspiration behind Byways

March 24th 2011 at 1:40 pm

Or at least one of them. In my story Byways I wrote about crews ripping up roads. Counterpoint

Philip Brewer disagrees with me about nuclear power (though he made a slightly more compelling argument via email). Steve Bucheit also has a very compelling argument here, particularly this bit: Also, take another look at the chart XKCD put up. It makes you feel better, doesn’t it? After all, the extra dosage right next to [...]

eBooks & discoverability

March 22nd 2011 at 1:31 pm

Discoverability is still a big problem in the eBook market for me as a consumer. Amazon’s webpage is pretty good (as is book recommendations by people online and tastes I trust), but seeing how much time and effort Netflix puts into its ‘suggestions’ algorithim, I think Amazon/Apple/B&N really need to look into something like this [...]

A take on nuclear power

March 21st 2011 at 3:52 pm

George Monbiot for the Guardian: You will not be surprised to hear that the events in Japan have changed my view of nuclear power. You will be surprised to hear how they have changed it. As a result of the disaster at Fukushima, I am no longer nuclear-neutral. I now support the technology. A crappy [...]
