We have something like that at my workplace. I admit it's something I don't take advantage of enough.

I was delighted to see one of these at the old-fashioned train station here in Galesburg, IL, just as I was about to depart for a John Mayer concert in Chicago.

I had no need for it, though; I had a paperback of Ender's Game at the ready. Finished the book on the train ride back, and damn was it good.

I, too, was shocked to see this sort of thing in a such a society as present-day America. iPods and GameBoys are cool, sure, but I don't think anything will ever replace a good book.

Enjoying Crystal Rain at the moment. I'm about 1/3 of the way through, and I'll probably go straight into Ragamuffin when I'm done.

I always feel bad when I see shelves like that. Often, they have at least one book I want. But they always seem to pop up when I don't have a book I'm ready to pass on with me (especially since I've begun using a Kindle/iPhone for pleasure reading). And I'm the kind of person who feels bad if I just take a book off a shelf without some kind of payment/barter. Maybe it's just me, though.

Sadly I expect here people here in the US would take and not leave a replacement.

This is something I would expect to see in the 50's but not today. That says something about our society today.
