The Alchemist & The Executioness

images.jpegSo I’ve talked about a novella I’ve been fiddling around with for the last year, The Executioness, off and on. I’m happy to report that it’s finished. But that’s not all.

The Executioness is going to be one of two novellas, put together back to back (like the old Ace doubles) to create a larger project that is about as long as a short novel. The other novella was written by Paolo Bacigalupi and is called The Alchemist. Together they’ll be The Alchemist & The Executioness.

The next twist is that both novellas share the same background. We created a world, characters, places, and each novella uses that. So together they create a cool glimpse at this world Paolo and I made. Both of us were also excited to write something we don’t get a chance to write often: Fantasy. With our own unique takes, of course.

So where will you be able to read it?

You’ll be able to listen to it. You will be able to hear The Alchemist & The Executioness sometime this summer out from Audible.com.

It was crazy fun to work with Paolo, and I can’t wait for it to hit the streets!

Hell yes. Do you have narrator(s) yet?

:-) No, not yet, we just turned the final in Monday morning. As we hear more we’ll spill deets. I’ll be looking forward to seeing what Audible does, as Metatropolis was so much fun last time :-)

That’s a very cool idea! I’m not familiar with this concept, but it sounds interesting. So the two novellas will be packaged together as one book, right?

I really like Paolo’s work – I’ll really be interested in seeing how this turns out.

Looking forward to hearing this when it comes out.

I fondly remember the Ace doubles I bought when I was a kid. I wonder if this is something that could be brought back to mainstream publishing or if the logistics make it impractical on a larger scale.

This sounds like a very interesting project. At least, it has me intrigued.

Frankerson: it will be sold as a single book, initially as a single audiobook at http://www.audible.com (or on iTunes).

That sounds awesome — when you say fantasy, I assume you mean ‘secondary world’? What tech level/historical analogues are we talking?

The only possible drawback is that you can’t physically flip a podcast over like you could the old ace doubles. :) Is this going to be audio only?

Oops — disregard my question above…just saw your response to Frankerson.

Saladin: second world fantasy, with some traces of the Renaissance level of handiwork (think brass artisanship).

Cool! I just recently listened to “Windup Girl” courtesy of audible.

That sounds great! I remember those old back-to-back books. How fun!

I got to read (and fondly remember) some of those ACE doubles back at the dawn of my reading career…so I completely am behind this idea!
