What bumps books sales?
Jim Hines has a graph.
I have a similar graph, and the graph looks almost identical (other books bump sales, release is a big spike, Christmas another).
Unlike Jim, my graph has some smaller spikes as a result of a regional book tour I did with John Scalzi, appearing on a local access cable show, and one time, a huge spike for no apparent reason.

Is Pop Cult the show you’re talking about? We did see a bump in Detroit area sales a week or so back, and I believe that matched my episode of the show, but because of the timing those get blended in with Christmas.
Hm … I’d be interested in hearing more about the Scalzi effect

Jim: yeah, it was Pop Cult. In fact, one time Joshua called and asked if I’d ‘done anything in Detroit last week’ and I looked at the numbers and saw a nice bump, and then just as I was about to email Joshua, Jim from Pop Cult emailed and said ‘hey, ran your interview again last week and here’s some fan mail about it.’
I’ve seen other traditional old media bump sales as well.
It’s changed my thinking a bit about how to approach the next round of promotions.
