Don’t panic: the words are still there

comic.jpgLucy Lou has a great webcomic about why we shouldn’t freak out about changes coming at us and just focus on the work itself.

I think its particularly good advice. I’m thinking about ten years ago, when I first got into the field, everyone was freaking out and spending energy on webpages and how they were going to change novel writing forever.

The energy could be spent keeping an eye on the prevailing winds and focusing on the craft itself.

Telling a good story is something that will be useful no matter the medium. And people can transition if they value learning no matter where they are in their artist’s journey. Whether its a small iPod screen and trying to figure out how to write best for that, or a screen, whether for audio or screenplay, I think just making sure your brain is elastic enough that you can head in an interesting direction is what counts.

I suppose then, that it doesn’t surprise me that authors like Neil Gaiman, who use graphic novels, screenplays, audio, short stories, novels for adults, kids, who are able to express their art in various media, are very successful. I anticipate more of that.

I’m inclined to agree. I also think that, as writers, it’s rather difficult for us to try and keep up and stay on top of what is a constantly changing field. It’s worth knowing what’s going on, but I don’t have the time, energy, or inclination to simultaneously become a writer, editor, scriptwriter, director, actor, film editor, animator, computer programmer, etc. Someone’s going to have to bring another skill set and energy (not to mention time and money) to the task in order to pull it all off. I’ll concentrate on doing what I do best and doing it better each time out of the box.

My response to everyone who freaks out over eBooks around me:

    “You’re showing your age.”

Very yes. I saw that comic the other day too, and it made me realize that the whole debate is silly. A waste of time, even: (1) I can’t convince anyone other than myself and (2) in a decade or so, I won’t have to.

Also complicating that is fact that Thalia needs to be home tommorow since she has a cold: cough, runny nose, mild fever. 7 hrs ago

I fell asleep at 7:30pm and woke up at 12:30 due to coughing kid. Awake now. Will be interesting to see when I get tired. 7 hrs ago

Of course, I'm risking cliche. But these are the travails of being an entertainer: in realism vs keep story moving, moving wins 7 hrs ago

Mmm. The extended rise to leader of army plot sequence in this novella will be cut in favor of Duel To Death! Other way is long/boring. :) 7 hrs ago

Thalia's home today sick. Poor kid. Poor Toby's deadline LOL. 19 hrs ago
