Kyle Cassidy braves the corn to visit Buckell HQ
Kyle Cassidy is a pretty awesome dude. Of late his photography has been mentioned on Boing Boing (where I first encountered him), both his project “Where I Write: Science Fiction Authors in Their Creative Spaces” and the pictures of fans at Montreal Worldcon, though he’s done many more. They’re fairly amazing, and it’s no surprise Kyle is just as interesting as the pictures he takes.
He contacted me a couple months ago trying to figure out how best to map out a trip through Ohio to take pics of various authors‘ offices for Where I Write II. I did my best to get him author’s emails and introductions, and it was pretty cool to get to meet him in person here in Bluffton.
Most interesting to me is not just Kyle’s love of his work and energy (people doing what they love always have that), but his photographer’s eye for interesting things around (Fall colors, buildings, Americana), stuff that I usually fail to appreciate. I always see better places just around the corner (particularly out of state), he grooves on what is interesting right in front of him.
He also digs a good scotch. He was happy to crash on air mattress in the office after dinner at a local Mexican place, and since I haven’t had a night of scotch in over a year, I probably talked the poor man’s ear off as we hung out, enjoyed scotch, and talked about SF/F, author’s dens, and all other sorts of miscellany.
It’s his birthday today, on a grey Ohio day as he’s spending most of it driving to Cleveland for the next leg in his tour. You should wish him happy birthday in his LJ!

Also complicating that is fact that Thalia needs to be home tommorow since she has a cold: cough, runny nose, mild fever. 7 hrs ago
I fell asleep at 7:30pm and woke up at 12:30 due to coughing kid. Awake now. Will be interesting to see when I get tired. 7 hrs ago
Of course, I'm risking cliche. But these are the travails of being an entertainer: in realism vs keep story moving, moving wins 7 hrs ago
Mmm. The extended rise to leader of army plot sequence in this novella will be cut in favor of Duel To Death! Other way is long/boring. :) 7 hrs ago

Great authorial photo, that is. I can’t wait to see Where I Write II debut. Thanks for the heads up on that.

Nice picture, captures a lot. How long did it take for you to relax in front of the camera, or did he do the whole “go for a walk, oh, hey, just stand over there for a sec ::click::” thing?

I think he did capture elements of your personality well Toby. The colors are great….
