Edgewater realized

In my story in Metatropolis I surmised the rise of private security forces taking over police duty in Detroit in the near future. Sadly, this is yet another aspect of the story I wrote coming true right now.

Wow. They had men with shotguns guarding every house in the “posher” neighborhood of Islamabad I went to earlier in the year. I remember it reminding me of Octavia Butler novel. And now again, we’re inching closer to that dark day right here in the States…

When I listened to the audiobook, the first thing that came to mind about Edgewater was the police force being owned by OCP in Robocop, also set in Detroit. I didn’t think it was so far-fetched even when that movie came out.

King Rat beat me to it, but isn’t this just proof that we’re moving closer and closer to Robocop? Think about it – we already have unmanned combat drones. It’s only a matter of time before we see ED-209’s running around.

This is why I think Stocasti-city is some of your best work and also why I really hope to see more from you concerning Reginald. Of all the stories in that collection, and of many stories in many collections on this topic your’s is one of those few that hits the head of the nail. A narrative of the future that’s very near. Better, while there is certainly a dystopic undertone the hero of the tale has cut ties with that reality and thus is able to act freely within the world he inhabits.

From a recent exchange on a mailing list:

“There’s a whole lot people can do without waiting for Daddy to get around to making up new rules. I’m seeing that a lot in the urban bicycling movement, even here in Sprawl Central; lots of the younger folks are more or less spontaneously just ignoring the idea that you “must have a car,” and living without, or living extremely car-lite. At this point several of my correspondents include the following quote from Gandhi in their email sigs: ‘You must become the change you wish to see.’ Three years ago it was only one.”

Also complicating that is fact that Thalia needs to be home tommorow since she has a cold: cough, runny nose, mild fever. 8 hrs ago

I fell asleep at 7:30pm and woke up at 12:30 due to coughing kid. Awake now. Will be interesting to see when I get tired. 8 hrs ago

Of course, I'm risking cliche. But these are the travails of being an entertainer: in realism vs keep story moving, moving wins 8 hrs ago

Mmm. The extended rise to leader of army plot sequence in this novella will be cut in favor of Duel To Death! Other way is long/boring. :) 8 hrs ago

Thalia's home today sick. Poor kid. Poor Toby's deadline LOL. 19 hrs ago
