Business card contest

May 15th 2009 at 1:12 am

So at the last three or four events I’ve been at, I haven’t had a business card, and I put it on my to-do list to create one.
Then I thought, I suck at graphics and it’ll just be a lame thing where I type in my name and address and snurrrrrr… sorry, I put myself [...]

Charles Tan reviews Tides From the New Worlds

May 11th 2009 at 1:46 am

Charles Tan at Bibliophile Stalker reviews my short story collection:
There might also be a misconception that Buckell’s character’s aren’t fleshed out but that’s not the case. Instead of chunky descriptive passages, Buckell boils them down to their core characteristics and the rest are discovered through the character’s actions and dialogue.
That’s pretty much how I think [...]

Happy Mother’s Day

May 10th 2009 at 2:19 pm

A shout out to my mum, who’s been my most enthusiastic fan from the get go (including the day she told me it was okay if I was going to be a librarian so I could spend all my days reading, since that was what I seemed obsessed with doing).
Little could she have known that [...]

A three year freelanceiversary

May 9th 2009 at 2:54 am

Today I will be celebrating being my own boss for 3 years, and am heading into my 4th year of making a living doing all sorts of creative, odd, different things. It’s nice to stop and reflect on the fact, and extremely fulfilling.
In early 2006, just two days before the launch of my very first [...]

Baby gang signs

May 8th 2009 at 2:49 pm

Thalia tossing gang signs (being dressed in all pink is Crips junior, in case you didn’t realize). I imagine her inner dialogue is something like:
“Westside Bluffton, motherfuckers, yeah! Better get a bottle up in this shiz or I’ll spit up all over your ass…”

I’m not a particularly normal parent, no, why do you ask?
Both twins [...]

The People’s Machine a Sidewise Nominee

May 7th 2009 at 8:05 pm

My short story The People’s Machine, in the Lou Anders edited anthology Sidewise In Crime, is up for the Sidewise Award. (Upon reflection, I think this is the first short story of mine actually up for an award since In Orbite Medievali went up for the Writers of the Future Grand Prize in 2000, so [...]

A better Star Trek trailer

May 4th 2009 at 4:04 pm

None of the trailers for the new Star Trek movie have been interesting to me, until someone pointed this one to me. The opening line “Your father was the captain of a star ship for twelve minutes. He saved 800 lives. I dare you to do better…” frames all the other scenery and ‘cool bits’ [...]

MentatJack reviews Tides

May 4th 2009 at 12:25 pm

Steven Klotz at MentatJack reviews Tides:
Many short story collections clock in well under 300 pages. Tides is a healthy 483, and nothing really feels just like filler. There’s plenty here that show literary muscles being flexed in preparation for the novels he wrote later, and not always where you’d suspect. In his novels, I can [...]
