Monday link dump: worldbuilding quotes, Millenicon karaoke pictures
Jonathan Rock quotes me, Jim Hines, Cat Rambo and Merri Haskell about worldbuilding on his blog.
Alethea Kontis has pictures up from this weekend’s Confluence Millenicon, as does Hugh Staples.
Joe Sherry wonders about the inclusion of the island Anegada in the story Mitigation in Fast Forward 2 written by me and Karl Schroeder, and how it connects to New Anegada, the world in Crystal Rain, Ragamuffin, and Sly Mongoose.
Anegada is one of the British Virgin Islands, an atoll coral island that is so flat you can see the palm trees on it before you see the island itself on approach.

As a result, with the highest point being 28 feet over sea level, it’s vulnerable to rising ocean levels.
I’ve always loved the name, so I created New Anegada (Nanagada) for the novels. In the short story Mitigation, the main character grew up on the real Anegada, which we posited would fall victim to rising ocean levels.
Today there pacific atolls that are planning how to evacuate their populations due to rising water levels and relocate their (albeit tiny) countries, which is wild to think about.

Also complicating that is fact that Thalia needs to be home tommorow since she has a cold: cough, runny nose, mild fever. 5 mins ago
I fell asleep at 7:30pm and woke up at 12:30 due to coughing kid. Awake now. Will be interesting to see when I get tired. 6 mins ago
Of course, I'm risking cliche. But these are the travails of being an entertainer: in realism vs keep story moving, moving wins 8 mins ago
Mmm. The extended rise to leader of army plot sequence in this novella will be cut in favor of Duel To Death! Other way is long/boring. :) 10 mins ago
Thalia's home today sick. Poor kid. Poor Toby's deadline LOL. 11 hrs ago

Thanks again for the advice! I am already using the principles I learned in my next short story.

It was great to see you this past weekend, Toby, and to hear your first chapter draft of Arctic Rising.
I should point out, however, that you were at Millennicon this past weekend, not Confluence.

So, would that be a no?
Before I posted that I googled Anegada so I’d have an idea of what I was wondering about. Given the low elevation above sea level, I can see how rising ocean levels would be a definite risk.

Joe: pretty much LOL. The stories don’t really lock in quite in the way.
The definitive Pepper short stories published so far are:
-Fish Merchant
-Manumission
-Resistance
