Carl Brandon Feb. reading recommendations list

February is Black History month, and the Carl Brandon Society’s members have voted on a list of books they think worth recommending.

Dark Matter: A Century Of Speculative Fiction From The African Diaspora, Sheree R. Thomas, editor, Warner/Aspect, 2000

Sly Mongoose, by Tobias S. Buckell, Tor Books, 2008

Fledgling, by Octavia E. Butler, Seven Stories Press, 2005

The Good House, by Tananarive Due, Washington Square Press, 2004

Midnight Robber, by Nalo Hopkinson, Aspect, 2000

The Shadow Speaker, Nnedi Okorafor, Hyperion Book CH, 2007

The Icarus Girl, by Helen Oyeyemi, Nan A. Talese, 2005

Wind Follower, by Carole Mcdonnell, Juno Books, 2007

Song Of Solomon, by Toni Morrison, Knopf, 1978, many other printings available

Filter House, by Nisi Shawl, Aqueduct Press, 2008

All good books (I’m biased about #2 of course), and I’ll also add that I blurbed and enjoyed Filter House. I’m less a fan of the Toni Morrison, her books are extremely well written, but I feel tired at the end of them by life’s burdens and after trying three of them that was enough for me :-)

Also complicating that is fact that Thalia needs to be home tommorow since she has a cold: cough, runny nose, mild fever. 3 mins ago

I fell asleep at 7:30pm and woke up at 12:30 due to coughing kid. Awake now. Will be interesting to see when I get tired. 4 mins ago

Of course, I'm risking cliche. But these are the travails of being an entertainer: in realism vs keep story moving, moving wins 6 mins ago

Mmm. The extended rise to leader of army plot sequence in this novella will be cut in favor of Duel To Death! Other way is long/boring. :) 7 mins ago

Thalia's home today sick. Poor kid. Poor Toby's deadline LOL. 11 hrs ago
