Your weekend movie: Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels
December 19th 2008 at 2:39 pm
For this weekend, I give you one of my favorite movies in the Guy Ritchie canon, and in the British gangster films canon.
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels features the misadventures of four East End chaps trying to figure out how to get ahead in life. This was Jason Statham as he can be directed, not when he’s aiming for action hero. He’s not someone who works well as a sole carrying actor, but he always shines in an ensemble cast like this one.
It’s dramatic, funny, bloody, and fast paced, and one of my top 20 films, and it’s on Hulu.com, so you can watch the entire thing like one long youtube clip, and I’ve embedded it below.
It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, mind you. But if you liked Snatch, you may well thoroughly enjoy this movie. Maybe you could consider him an English, a little bit more humorous/toned down version of Quentin Tarantino…
It is an ‘R’ rated movie, so HULU does ask you to login for ‘R’ movies, I apologize for that if you don’t already have an account.

I watched it on Hulu a few weeks ago. I was excited to see it on there. I also thoroughly enjoyed it. Re: Jason Statham — it’s also JS before he was a big name. Regardless, I’ll watch anything he’s in. Avoid Crank though. It’s horrendous. Neat idea, but terrible execution.
I just watched In the Name of the Father last night on Hulu — highly recommended. Daniel Day-Lewis is fast becoming my favorite actor.

Statham, I think, does all those movies cause they hand him money. The Bank Job is a caper movie he acts in wonderfully.

Joseph, glad to help out.
Statham can be horribly uneven, but one has to remember he’s a former East End ‘black market salesman’ who turned model then was discovered in Lock, Stock… by Guy Ritchie. He’s a bit rough around the edges, he needs directing, etc.
