I’m back at Lima Memorial due to a pulmonary embolism. Fun month. Details later via this entry.
This room has a view and lots of natural light. Pic attached.
Mood: frustrated/scared/tired/prickling with tubes out of my arms again.

Also complicating that is fact that Thalia needs to be home tommorow since she has a cold: cough, runny nose, mild fever. 9 hrs ago
I fell asleep at 7:30pm and woke up at 12:30 due to coughing kid. Awake now. Will be interesting to see when I get tired. 9 hrs ago
Of course, I'm risking cliche. But these are the travails of being an entertainer: in realism vs keep story moving, moving wins 9 hrs ago
Mmm. The extended rise to leader of army plot sequence in this novella will be cut in favor of Duel To Death! Other way is long/boring. :) 9 hrs ago
Thalia's home today sick. Poor kid. Poor Toby's deadline LOL. 20 hrs ago

Toby — I was going to . . . prayers and thoughts. Healing and love. If it’s worth anything, this happened to my best friend and she is fine today. You will be doing great in no time.

Working on getting phone to work. Back to you ASAP. Dogs are fed and have gone out. Hot Pockets for Turkey Day. Called Dad. He’s filled in. Will be leaving shortly.
11. Daniel Abraham on Nov 27th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
Dude. Suck.
I’ve just been talking about pulmonary embolisms with the Darling Wife. Turns out they’re a bit of a concern in her work (she’s an occupational therapist at the public hospital here). Anyway, if it would be useful to talk with someone about the technical aspects, feel free to call. She’s not an expert, but she’s above an educated layman.
12. Deb on Nov 27th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Yikes, Toby!! You take care of yourself!!! Hoping things get better quick.
13. Steve Leigh on Nov 27th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Damn, Toby! Our thoughts and best wishes are with you and Emily. Let the anticoagulants do their job, and get better ASAP!
14. Kristine Smith on Nov 27th, 2008 at 12:13 pm

Get well soon. Thoughts and prayers……
17. LauraJMixon on Nov 27th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
This must be very scary. May your stay in hospital be short and your healing swift.
18. David J. Williams on Nov 27th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
Hospitals are the worst places to reflect on anything, but at least they’re all over this. Hang in there, man; fingers crossed. You’ll be right as rain shortly.
19. Pablo Defendini on Nov 27th, 2008 at 12:20 pm

Let us know if you need anything. We can feed and take out the dogs, bring food, whatever.
23. Steve Miller on Nov 27th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
Toby,
there’s gotta be a better way to get a room with a view. Keep posting and we’ll keep the fingers crossed for you getting out of there soon.
24. David Anthony Durham on Nov 27th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
Toby, I’m so sorry to hear this. I’ll be thinking about you and looking forward to seeing you again in better times.
25. Justin Macumber on Nov 27th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
Tobias, you’d better get well soon. I hate that this is happening, not only because your book just came out and because it’s the holidays, but also because you’re too nice a guy for it. I’m sending you all the best wishes that I can.
26. John on Nov 27th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
Serious bummer.
I command you to get better!
[gazes intently...waves fingers]
27. Heidi on Nov 27th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
Geez, I know you don’t need this right now so best wishes for a speedy recovery. I hope Lima has it’s medical genius equivalent of House (without the attendant issues, but that may be too much to ask) and they make sure that you have a long respite from health problems.
28. Charlie Stross on Nov 27th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Aw, shite. Good luck with that — and at least you’re in the right place (hospital)!
29. Tim Moore on Nov 27th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
Toby,
Best wishes, again. Get well soon!

Mr. T: Reading Sly Mongoose, loving it, and thinking of you and your family. Take care.
31. Renee Byrd on Nov 27th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
I heard about your situation from rydra_wong on LJ. If you get well soon, I promise to buy a copy of “Sly Mongoose.” You _have_ to pull through well, if for nothing else but the sake of my library!
32. Lon on Nov 27th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
Toby, Not too far south of that here. If you need anything–anything at all, let me know. Hot Pockets for Thanksgiving particularly jab my sensibilities. We can bring you and Emily some more holiday-appropriate grub later today after it’s cooked and before visiting hours close. We have plenty and it’s no problem. Just say the word.
33. Jeff on Nov 27th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
Get well soon, sir.
Keep in mind that this can (with the right combination of medications) be viewed through a slight fog as a wonderful opportunity. You can use the enforced bed time to figure out what one of your characters would do during a convalescence. Or perhaps you can concentrate on medical advances to use in a story to make hospital time so much easier on everyone. Perhaps your nursing staff can offer a few suggestions instead of just sleeping pills?
Take care of yourself!
34. Kirstie on Nov 27th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
Sorry to hear this. I hope things turn around for you soon and you can go home and get strong and healthy again.
35. HollyAnn on Nov 27th, 2008 at 1:14 pm

Damn. Good luck and best wishes. I’m reading Crystal Rain right now!
40. Hugh Staples on Nov 27th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Dude, take care of yourself!!! Get. Well. Now.
41. Michael Dean on Nov 27th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
Tobias,
Think positive thoughts only! I’ve never met you face to face but I check your site everyday! To be really honest…I’ve only bought Crystal Rain so far and I haven’t even read it. I bought it because I’m a supporter of you and what you do.
When I’m at Barnes & Noble I always make sure to set your new book Sly Mongoose, face front in the new SciFi section. (The Buckell Street Team in full effect!)
Anyway I’m a fan of your journey. This event you are going threw is only temporary. You got a long way to go sir.
I’m trying to see the Crystal Rain movie. So you gotta be around for that. We will stay praying for you and your family.
p.s.
when you get out, I prescribe a xbox controller in her your hand and Left 4 Dead on the screen.
peace
42. Gillian C on Nov 27th, 2008 at 1:28 pm

43. Amber Sistla on Nov 27th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
I think you’ve exceeded your need-to-go-to-the-hospital quota for at least a couple of years.
Get out soon.
~amber

Gosh darn it. Dash it all. Crimennetley.

Take care Toby!
46. Zeo on Nov 27th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Best wishes for you and your family; I can’t imagine how frustrating this must be.
47. Adam Israel on Nov 27th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Get well soon, man. It sucks to be going through all this at such a young age, especially again during the holiday, but it’s a good thing you’re getting this diagnosed/treated now.
48. David B. Coe on Nov 27th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Damn, Toby. Hope the recovery is quick and you’re back home soon. You’re in my thoughts.
49. Jaime on Nov 27th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Ah shit, Toby. That wasn’t supposed to happen…which makes me Captain Obvious, but you know what I mean.
Try and relax as much as you can. I used to run character dialogue through my head while in CT scanners or during an MRI. It helped believe it or not, so maybe plotting the next book in your head?
Complete with some guy full of tubes and wires of course.
50. Cheryl on Nov 27th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Still thinking of you, buddy. Take care.
51. JReynolds on Nov 27th, 2008 at 2:12 pm

59. John Scalzi on Nov 27th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
Here’s at least one bright bit of news for you, Toby: The Cole Protocol, at this very moment, has the #1 ranking in the science fiction category at Amazon. That, my friend, does not suck.
Be better soon, and congratulations!
60. Liz on Nov 27th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
I’m so sorry! That sucks.

65. PJ on Nov 27th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Oh, no! I’m so sorry to hear this. I went through a PE a few years ago after I broke my leg. My son is loving TCP, by the way; in fact, I think he’s almost finished it already.
Wishing you a speedy recovery,
~PJ~
66. Mike F. on Nov 27th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Sorry to hear you are back in the hospital. Hope you get better soon!
67. Gregory Frost on Nov 27th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
SO…I have one more thing to be thankful for today…that you are still with us. Rest up, and come out stable. You are far too young to be having my problems for me.
yrs,
greg
68. Ardaniel Collier on Nov 27th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
Among all the other things I’m thankful for today, Tobias, I’m glad you’re in a good hospital getting the care you need, and that your friends in the area are looking out for you and your family.
69. Martyn44 on Nov 27th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Get well, again, real soon now.
70. Mike on Nov 27th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Fuck! There has got to be some serious good karma coming your way to make up for all this bullshit. For instance, perhaps they will discover that the blockage was caused by a crisp new $1,000,000,000 bill… “Surprise! We minted it just for you!” Cameras will be trotted out, dancing wimmin…
Take care sir, me and the missus are thinking of you!
71. girotix on Nov 27th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Get better soon, Tobias.
Greetings from Catalonia (Spain).

73. Amy Sisson on Nov 27th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
What unfortunate timing, not that this would be good at any time! I hope you can take some comfort in the thought of how very many people are thinking of you and wishing you the quickest possible recovery.
74. Jeff Beeler on Nov 27th, 2008 at 5:23 pm
Hang in there Toby!
You are in the best place possible to be the hospital.
Jeff

82. Mark Terry on Nov 27th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
Take care.
Also, in the yes-I’m-a-layman-but-I-know-things, they will probably treat you with heparin. There is a genetic test that they can have performed that will help determine proper dosage–i.e., it determines how you respond to heparin. It’s a good thing to have.
Hope you’re better soon.
83. beth meacham on Nov 27th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
Sorry to hear it, Toby. I hope they figure out what’s wrong this time, and get you fixed up. Feel better!

87. Allen Steele on Nov 27th, 2008 at 7:56 pm

Wishing you all the well in the world from our vantage point near the bottom of it.
Do you have sufficient insurance for this or shall we start stoking up the fan help engine?

I’ve had trouble getting online or I would have seen this earlier. Aw, crap, is what I say. I think this sounds like a job for hamster prayer wheels.
94. Marsha Sisolak on Nov 27th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Good thoughts and prayers for a quick recovery, Toby. Hopefully you’ll lose those tubes and be out of there soon.

That’s very scary. But on the plus side you’ve been diagnosed, which can be tricky, and hopefully being treated by now. Feel better soon.
I had a microembolism while pregnant with my youngest son, along with a dvt my doctor called “The clot that ate Cleveland.” I was terrified but thankfully my son and I were both okay in the end.

Bloody hell. Is this related to what they saw on the CAT scan while you were in before?
I hope you recover soon and thoroughly, and don’t have to see the inside of a hospital again for a long, long time.
114. Maria V. Snyder on Nov 28th, 2008 at 1:00 am
Wow Toby – lots of well wishers here! I’ve been catching up on the SFNovelist emails – it’s been a bit of a rollar coaster ride for you. I hope the ride is soon over and you’re fully recovered and back home.
Sending good vibes your way!

Thoughts and prayers coming your way from Scranton, PA!!!
118. Dr. Phil on Nov 28th, 2008 at 2:37 am
Damn — that first round of well wishes must’ve been defective. Their potency didn’t last nearly long enough.
Still, being in the hospital right now is the best place to be under the circumstances. Let us hope the stay is short and fruitful.

My thoughts are with you. You don’t know me, but maybe that makes it better.
Good health, soon.
124. BrianM on Nov 28th, 2008 at 8:21 am
Hi Toby – Having suffered a PE myself I can imagine you’re probably pretty miserable. The joys of heparin and coumadin and many, many needles…a few words of advice though: Make sure that you tell the nurse that you are in a lot more pain than you actually are (it gets worse at night and the doctors are never around then) and try be patient because it takes awhile to get rid of the clots. You will be in the hospital for the whole 5 days, no matter what they tell you otherwise. The good news is that spending 6 months or a year (or the rest of your life, like me) on coumadin or waferin therapy is not a huge price to pay to avoid another PE. Best of luck!
Oh – and please remember to drink lots of water so as to avoid catheterization. You know they have to put that in through…well, you know where they put that in.
125. Ralan on Nov 28th, 2008 at 8:35 am
Get better soon … we need you!
126. Tempest on Nov 28th, 2008 at 8:41 am
Arg, didn’t check my blogs and such until just now. Sucks to be in the hospital, especially on a holiday. Hope you get better and quick, because it sucks to be sick in general.
127. Hugh on Nov 28th, 2008 at 9:21 am
Hope you get better soon – best wishes from across the Atlantic.
If it helps perk you up, recently bought/read Crystal Rain and Ragamuffin due to you being mentioned on Whatever by John Scalzi (another fine author, imho) – so your ill health had some (very small) benefit.
128. OtherMichael on Nov 28th, 2008 at 9:40 am
Jeez louise — this is no way to thank me for re-reading Crystal Rain last week!
(rephrased, this is good-wishes from Scranton PA, home of hard-core Buckell love, it seems….)
129. Nora on Nov 28th, 2008 at 10:03 am
How terrible!! And on TG, no less. =( Positive vibes toward you and your family. Get well soon.

Thinking of you, Toby. Directing as much karma your way as I can.
136. Chas on Nov 28th, 2008 at 11:49 am
Hey man, Got here from John Scalzi’s post. I haven’t read anything of yours yet, but I will as soon as I can buy some. I’ve been in the hospital suddenly for heart problems, too, and I can empathize with how you’re feeling right now.
I hope you have a speedy recovery. My good thoughts go out to you.
137. CaseyL on Nov 28th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
Renewing previous best wishes for a speedy recovery, this one with a proviso to not wear out so fast (the recovery, that is).
Hope you’re back and fightin’ fit very very soon!
138. Cynthia on Nov 28th, 2008 at 12:15 pm

Once more, my best wishes on your speedy recovery, averting as much unpleasantness as possible. Truly the world seems to have it in for you this month, but soon it will be December…

So sorry to hear that, Toby. Best wishes for speedy recovery and another homecoming soon.
148. TheAdlerian on Nov 28th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
I had something like that about ten years ago, and it didn’t kill me, but it kind of should have. Happy it didn’t though, and it changed how I look at life.
Being sick sucks, but if you survive, then you’ve learned a lot about life and about suffering (unless you’re an idiot). I find myself much more empathetic and less worried about minor details.
Don’t waste time on negativity and enjoy life as it comes!
149. Laurie Mann on Nov 28th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
A shame, Toby. Hope it resolves itself soon.
150. Walter Jon Williams on Nov 28th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
What wretched news! And on a holiday weekend, too!
Strength to your arm, your heart, your spirit.
151. A Fan on Nov 28th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
Damn.. there’s a history of heart problems in my family also, so I know how frightening this can be. I’m very glad they found in time to treat it. Hang in there and get well soon Toby!
152. pixelfish on Nov 29th, 2008 at 2:49 am
I hope they get you fixxored up soon!!!
Be ye well.
153. Nashville Heat on Nov 29th, 2008 at 3:27 am
Just heard about the embolism from Scalzi’s blog. I hope by now you have recovered and headed home where you belong. Here’s a prayer for you anyway. You’ve got a lot of people concerned for you, dude. That counts for something.
Oh, yeah. You might want to skip the House episodes.
154. SQT on Nov 29th, 2008 at 3:50 am
Oh no! At least they can monitor you and make sure you’re okay in the hospital. I hope you get better soon.
155. Ruthy Charlot on Nov 29th, 2008 at 9:45 am
I’m sorry to hear that you’re laid up, but glad to know you survived the embolism.
I’m wishing you rapid healing and total recovery.
156. Kasey Mackenzie on Nov 29th, 2008 at 11:17 am

159. Jack Kincaid on Nov 29th, 2008 at 4:57 pm

I’ll just go ahead and echo all the good sentiment on this thread. Get better soon. You have more stories to tell.
162. Rene on Nov 30th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
Shit. My fingers are crossed that you’ll get better and stay better.
163. Lynne Thomas on Dec 1st, 2008 at 10:41 am
Yikes! I hope that you are feeling better.
164. BeVibe on Dec 2nd, 2008 at 12:13 pm
Toby – you haven’t said you are home, so this must mean you’re stuck in the hospital. *dang*
Do everything they tell you and ask lots of questions. Nurses and attendants are awesome caregivers and can be your bestest friends when you are stuck in the hospital. (believe me, i know what i’m talking about here…)
I’ve managed to acquire Crystal Rain & Ragamuffin, and am enjoying the development of Pepper’s character. I waited to get them before reading Sly Mongoose. (that was a tough wait from the signing at Books & Co.)
In other news, I saw the Halo book at WalMart and Meijer’s this weekend, so people don’t have to go to an actual bookstore to buy the book! How cool is that!!!
Take care, Toby. Maybe you can practice reading your work aloud for your upcoming appearances and signings?
165. Anne Harris on Dec 2nd, 2008 at 5:49 pm
hang in there, man.
166. Nick Harkaway on Dec 3rd, 2008 at 4:39 am
Hope you’re okay, Mr B. We haven’t met, but when we do, first round’s on me.
