image519833533.jpgI’m back at Lima Memorial due to a pulmonary embolism. Fun month. Details later via this entry.

This room has a view and lots of natural light. Pic attached.

Mood: frustrated/scared/tired/prickling with tubes out of my arms again.

Oh Toby. There are no words here. This shouldn’t be happening.

  5. 5. Amy Sterling Casil

Toby — I was going to . . . prayers and thoughts. Healing and love. If it’s worth anything, this happened to my best friend and she is fine today. You will be doing great in no time.

  6. 6. Diana Pharaoh Francis

You’re in my thoughts and prayers. Be well.

  7. 7. Jim C. Hines

Aw, crud. Very sorry to hear that, Toby. Hoping and praying they get you fixed up quick, and that they *keep* you healthy this time, dammit!

  8. 8. Kathy Sedia

    Hugs, Toby. Get better soon.

  9. 9. Kerry

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

  10. 10. Emily

Working on getting phone to work. Back to you ASAP. Dogs are fed and have gone out. Hot Pockets for Turkey Day. Called Dad. He’s filled in. Will be leaving shortly.

  11. 11. Daniel Abraham

    Dude. Suck.

I’ve just been talking about pulmonary embolisms with the Darling Wife. Turns out they’re a bit of a concern in her work (she’s an occupational therapist at the public hospital here). Anyway, if it would be useful to talk with someone about the technical aspects, feel free to call. She’s not an expert, but she’s above an educated layman.

  12. 12. Deb

Yikes, Toby!! You take care of yourself!!! Hoping things get better quick.

  13. 13. Steve Leigh

Damn, Toby! Our thoughts and best wishes are with you and Emily. Let the anticoagulants do their job, and get better ASAP!

  14. 14. Kristine Smith

Damn–I wish you could have had a quiet holiday. Get well soon.

  15. 15. Jim Hetley

    Oh, shit . . .

Get better and get the hell out of there, okay?

  16. 16. Mark

Get well soon. Thoughts and prayers……

  17. 17. LauraJMixon

This must be very scary. May your stay in hospital be short and your healing swift.

  18. 18. David J. Williams

Hospitals are the worst places to reflect on anything, but at least they’re all over this. Hang in there, man; fingers crossed. You’ll be right as rain shortly.

  19. 19. Pablo Defendini

Damn, Toby. My thoughts are with you. get better right quick!

  20. 20. rydra_wong

Eep. Sending good thoughts your way …

  21. 21. Derek

    Crazy. Sending positive thoughts man…

  22. 22. Rae Finlay

Ah, geez, Toby. *kicks Universe’s ass*

Let us know if you need anything. We can feed and take out the dogs, bring food, whatever.

  23. 23. Steve Miller

    Toby,

there’s gotta be a better way to get a room with a view. Keep posting and we’ll keep the fingers crossed for you getting out of there soon.

  24. 24. David Anthony Durham

Toby, I’m so sorry to hear this. I’ll be thinking about you and looking forward to seeing you again in better times.

  25. 25. Justin Macumber

Tobias, you’d better get well soon. I hate that this is happening, not only because your book just came out and because it’s the holidays, but also because you’re too nice a guy for it. I’m sending you all the best wishes that I can.

  26. 26. John

    Serious bummer.

I command you to get better!
    [gazes intently...waves fingers]

  27. 27. Heidi

Geez, I know you don’t need this right now so best wishes for a speedy recovery. I hope Lima has it’s medical genius equivalent of House (without the attendant issues, but that may be too much to ask) and they make sure that you have a long respite from health problems.

  28. 28. Charlie Stross

Aw, shite. Good luck with that — and at least you’re in the right place (hospital)!

  29. 29. Tim Moore

    Toby,

Best wishes, again. Get well soon!

    Tim

  30. 30. Leslie

Mr. T: Reading Sly Mongoose, loving it, and thinking of you and your family. Take care.

  31. 31. Renee Byrd

I heard about your situation from rydra_wong on LJ. If you get well soon, I promise to buy a copy of “Sly Mongoose.” You _have_ to pull through well, if for nothing else but the sake of my library!

  32. 32. Lon

Toby, Not too far south of that here. If you need anything–anything at all, let me know. Hot Pockets for Thanksgiving particularly jab my sensibilities. We can bring you and Emily some more holiday-appropriate grub later today after it’s cooked and before visiting hours close. We have plenty and it’s no problem. Just say the word.

  33. 33. Jeff

    Get well soon, sir.

Keep in mind that this can (with the right combination of medications) be viewed through a slight fog as a wonderful opportunity. You can use the enforced bed time to figure out what one of your characters would do during a convalescence. Or perhaps you can concentrate on medical advances to use in a story to make hospital time so much easier on everyone. Perhaps your nursing staff can offer a few suggestions instead of just sleeping pills? ;) Take care of yourself!

  34. 34. Kirstie

Sorry to hear this. I hope things turn around for you soon and you can go home and get strong and healthy again.

  35. 35. HollyAnn

Sending good thoughts your way. Hope all is okay soon.

  36. 36. Kelly McCullough

Very sorry to hear this. Take care of yourself and get better soon.

  37. 37. Kei

Oh no. Sending wishes for a speedy recovery.

  38. 38. Kate Elliott

Take care, Toby. My very best wishes toward you and your healing.

  39. 39. Jordan Lapp

Damn. Good luck and best wishes. I’m reading Crystal Rain right now!

  40. 40. Hugh Staples

Dude, take care of yourself!!! Get. Well. Now. :-)

  41. 41. Michael Dean

    Tobias,
Think positive thoughts only! I’ve never met you face to face but I check your site everyday! To be really honest…I’ve only bought Crystal Rain so far and I haven’t even read it. I bought it because I’m a supporter of you and what you do.
When I’m at Barnes & Noble I always make sure to set your new book Sly Mongoose, face front in the new SciFi section. (The Buckell Street Team in full effect!) :)

Anyway I’m a fan of your journey. This event you are going threw is only temporary. You got a long way to go sir. ;) I’m trying to see the Crystal Rain movie. So you gotta be around for that. We will stay praying for you and your family.

    p.s.
when you get out, I prescribe a xbox controller in her your hand and Left 4 Dead on the screen.
    peace

  42. 42. Gillian C

Oh no! Sending good thoughts your way. Hope you’re back on your feet soon.

  43. 43. Amber Sistla

I think you’ve exceeded your need-to-go-to-the-hospital quota for at least a couple of years.
    Get out soon.
    ~amber

  44. 44. Wendy S. Delmater

Gosh darn it. Dash it all. Crimennetley.

I mean, golly gee whiz. Sending good thoughts with a side of cranberry sauce and some gravy.

  45. 45. Julia P

    Take care Toby!

  46. 46. Zeo

Best wishes for you and your family; I can’t imagine how frustrating this must be.

  47. 47. Adam Israel

Get well soon, man. It sucks to be going through all this at such a young age, especially again during the holiday, but it’s a good thing you’re getting this diagnosed/treated now.

  48. 48. David B. Coe

Damn, Toby. Hope the recovery is quick and you’re back home soon. You’re in my thoughts.

  49. 49. Jaime

Ah shit, Toby. That wasn’t supposed to happen…which makes me Captain Obvious, but you know what I mean.

Try and relax as much as you can. I used to run character dialogue through my head while in CT scanners or during an MRI. It helped believe it or not, so maybe plotting the next book in your head?

Complete with some guy full of tubes and wires of course. ;)

  50. 50. Cheryl

Still thinking of you, buddy. Take care.

  51. 51. JReynolds

Best of luck, Toby. I know you’ll pull through.

  52. 52. Ken McConnell

Try to stay calm. We’re all pulling for you to get better and get back to work.

  53. 53. rick

    dammit. Get well soon Toby.

  54. 54. Eleanor from Flights of Fantasy

I hope you get better soon & get to stay out of hospitals for a long long time! I’m looking forward to your next book, & like your blog… Be well!

  55. 55. Gennita Low

Prayers and good thoughts of you. Get well soon!

  56. 56. Tziedel

Best wishes and hopes that you are home soon and well.

  57. 57. SMD

    Please get better soon, man.

  58. 58. Josh S.

Get better mate, sending good energy your way.

  59. 59. John Scalzi

Here’s at least one bright bit of news for you, Toby: The Cole Protocol, at this very moment, has the #1 ranking in the science fiction category at Amazon. That, my friend, does not suck.

    Be better soon, and congratulations!

  60. 60. Liz

    I’m so sorry! That sucks.

Here’s my most amusing link of the day:

    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8860158196198824415

Watch on through if you’re looking for thinkyness – it’s good when you start to get the twist, even if you’re not a programmer.

  61. 61. ccfinlay

Toby! Get better and come home, and Rae and I will bring you pie, any kind of pie you want.

  62. 62. vinceruth

get well sir, we’re all thinking of you

  63. 63. Justine Larbalestier

You poor bastard. Get well soon!

  64. 64. Ellen Datlow

Dammit! Sorry to hear about this. Get well soon.

  65. 65. PJ

Oh, no! I’m so sorry to hear this. I went through a PE a few years ago after I broke my leg. My son is loving TCP, by the way; in fact, I think he’s almost finished it already. :-D

    Wishing you a speedy recovery,

    ~PJ~

  66. 66. Mike F.

Sorry to hear you are back in the hospital. Hope you get better soon!

  67. 67. Gregory Frost

SO…I have one more thing to be thankful for today…that you are still with us. Rest up, and come out stable. You are far too young to be having my problems for me.

    yrs,
    greg

  68. 68. Ardaniel Collier

Among all the other things I’m thankful for today, Tobias, I’m glad you’re in a good hospital getting the care you need, and that your friends in the area are looking out for you and your family.

  69. 69. Martyn44

Get well, again, real soon now.

  70. 70. Mike

Fuck! There has got to be some serious good karma coming your way to make up for all this bullshit. For instance, perhaps they will discover that the blockage was caused by a crisp new $1,000,000,000 bill… “Surprise! We minted it just for you!” Cameras will be trotted out, dancing wimmin…

Take care sir, me and the missus are thinking of you!

  71. 71. girotix

    Get better soon, Tobias.

    Greetings from Catalonia (Spain).

  72. 72. Catherine Schaff-Stump

During the holidays makes it even worse. I’m sorry.

    Wishing you healing and hope,

    Catherine

  73. 73. Amy Sisson

What unfortunate timing, not that this would be good at any time! I hope you can take some comfort in the thought of how very many people are thinking of you and wishing you the quickest possible recovery.

  74. 74. Jeff Beeler

    Hang in there Toby!

You are in the best place possible to be the hospital.

    Jeff

  75. 75. Marguerite

    Oh, honey. I’m so sorry.

Good thoughts and hugs to drive the dark away. There’s stuffing and turkey and pie for you when you get out.

  76. 76. JustAnotherJohn

Well, I’m thankful you’re around. Feel better, get well soon.

  77. 77. Sean Williams

Sorry to hear this, Toby. Sending a huge wave of positive vibes your way. (It’s spring down here, so it comes with extra oomph.)

  78. 78. Michael Curry

Well, crap. Hope you feel better soon, and then are healthy for a long while thereafter.

  79. 79. Dave Schwartz

Take care, and I hope they get you out of there soon.

  80. 80. Leah Bobet

Ack ack ack. Take it easy, and I hope this all resolves quickly and in the best way possible.

  81. 81. Robert Hutchinson

Get well soon, and then stay that way, doggone it.

  82. 82. Mark Terry

    Take care.

Also, in the yes-I’m-a-layman-but-I-know-things, they will probably treat you with heparin. There is a genetic test that they can have performed that will help determine proper dosage–i.e., it determines how you respond to heparin. It’s a good thing to have.

    Hope you’re better soon.

  83. 83. beth meacham

Sorry to hear it, Toby. I hope they figure out what’s wrong this time, and get you fixed up. Feel better!

  84. 84. Stephen Granade

    Aw, man. I’m so sorry.

  85. 85. Matthew Sanborn Smith

Stay strong, man. You’ll be back on your feet before you know it.

  86. 86. Charles Tan

    Get well soon!

  87. 87. Allen Steele

I’m very sorry to learn about all this. Hopefully it will be the last time you’ll find yourself in the hospital, at least for a long time to come. Take care of yourself, my friend, and stop chasing the nurses.

  88. 88. Norayr Gurnagul

Best wishes Toby, hope you get back home soon !

  89. 89. Daniel Spector

    Damnation.

Wishing you all the well in the world from our vantage point near the bottom of it.

Do you have sufficient insurance for this or shall we start stoking up the fan help engine?

  90. 90. Maura McHugh

Best of luck. Hopefully it’ll only be a short visit and you’ll be back with your family soon.

  91. 91. Fred

Best wishes to you and your family, and please get well soon!

  92. 92. Pam McNew

Damn. I hope all well goes well and you’re home very soon. You and Emily are in my thoughts and prayers.

  93. 93. Wyman Cooke

I’ve had trouble getting online or I would have seen this earlier. Aw, crap, is what I say. I think this sounds like a job for hamster prayer wheels.

  94. 94. Marsha Sisolak

Good thoughts and prayers for a quick recovery, Toby. Hopefully you’ll lose those tubes and be out of there soon.

  95. 95. Kelly Swails

Yikes!!!! I am so sorry to hear about this. Scary sh*t, but then you already know that. Take care of yourself and listen to what the doctors tell you. You and yours are in my thoughts.

  96. 96. Kat Richardson

Damn Toby, that sucks. Get better soon and get home! Best wishes and all good thoughts aimed your way.

  97. 97. John Picacio

Keep fighting, Toby! Better days ahead for you. Positive thoughts headed your way….

  98. 98. Chang

Ah, shit. Praying for you. Grateful for you. I will be even more grateful for your return to health.

  99. 99. Kelson

Jeebus, man. Wishing you the best.

  100. 100. Georgiana

That’s very scary. But on the plus side you’ve been diagnosed, which can be tricky, and hopefully being treated by now. Feel better soon.

I had a microembolism while pregnant with my youngest son, along with a dvt my doctor called “The clot that ate Cleveland.” I was terrified but thankfully my son and I were both okay in the end.

  101. 101. Josh Smith

Wishing you the best dude! I got Gears so as soon as your up and at ‘em we need to play!

Can we assume your being taken good care of?

  102. 102. Joe Sherry

Sorry to hear that, sir. Best wishes.

  103. 103. Vera Nazarian

Toby, HEAL! HEAL! HEAL! You hear now, get better, and remember everyone’s sending you our best wishes and healing energy. HUGS!!! :-)

  104. 104. S Andrew Swann

Good lord that is just a whole new universe of suck. My thoughts are with you. Get though this dude.

  105. 105. S Andrew Swann

    That’s get *through* this dude.

  106. 106. TomAq

The other day I ordered SLY MONGOOSE from Arizona’s best indie bookstore. (I figured this was the kind of news that might cheer up an author, but it does also happen to be true.) Good luck and get well!

  107. 107. Chris Green

    Get better soon Toby.
That shiny new Celica isn’t going to drive itself.
& Congratulations on the Amazon ranking.

  108. 108. James A. Owen

Hey Toby… you’ll get through this, brother. You’ve got a lot of people thinking good thoughts your way and pulling for you. Hang in there – be well. And know your friends are behind you.

  109. 109. Tarrell Childs

Hope everything works out for you. Have a quick and full recovery.

  110. 110. Mary Turzillo

Good luck, Toby. Get out of that place as fast as you can.

Thinking of you and hoping you heal fast.

    Mary T.

  111. 111. Nina A

Thinking of you. I hope you feel better soon.

  112. 112. Mary Turzillo

    And lay off the caffeine.

We’re sending good wishes your way –

    M

  113. 113. Rose Fox

Bloody hell. Is this related to what they saw on the CAT scan while you were in before?

I hope you recover soon and thoroughly, and don’t have to see the inside of a hospital again for a long, long time.

  114. 114. Maria V. Snyder

Wow Toby – lots of well wishers here! I’ve been catching up on the SFNovelist emails – it’s been a bit of a rollar coaster ride for you. I hope the ride is soon over and you’re fully recovered and back home.

    Sending good vibes your way!

    Maria

  115. 115. Christian

Take care – and please feel better soon Toby!

  116. 116. mythago

I shall have a word with the Universe about this immediately. Clearly, there has been some error. Looking forward to your being out of the hospital.

  117. 117. Delynn

    Aiiiiii!!! Not again!!!
    Once again, get better soon!!!
Thoughts and prayers coming your way from Scranton, PA!!!

  118. 118. Dr. Phil

Damn — that first round of well wishes must’ve been defective. Their potency didn’t last nearly long enough.

Still, being in the hospital right now is the best place to be under the circumstances. Let us hope the stay is short and fruitful.

    Dr. Phil

  119. 119. Tony StarShipSofa

    Hey Toby…

My thoughts and the Sofa’s listeners are with you. Gave a nice shout out for you on the show so hurry up and get yourself better….
    Best wishes….
    Tony

  120. 120. Tania

    Damn. Hell. Shazbat!

Good luck, our thoughts up here in the sub-arctic are with you.

  121. 121. MarkHB

Damn, that sucks. Best of luck, sir! Cole Protocol ordered from Amazon, because everyone knows that sales have healing mojo.

  122. 122. Marissa Lingen

Still thinking of you and hoping for the best.

  123. 123. JimR

My thoughts are with you. You don’t know me, but maybe that makes it better.

    Good health, soon.

  124. 124. BrianM

Hi Toby – Having suffered a PE myself I can imagine you’re probably pretty miserable. The joys of heparin and coumadin and many, many needles…a few words of advice though: Make sure that you tell the nurse that you are in a lot more pain than you actually are (it gets worse at night and the doctors are never around then) and try be patient because it takes awhile to get rid of the clots. You will be in the hospital for the whole 5 days, no matter what they tell you otherwise. The good news is that spending 6 months or a year (or the rest of your life, like me) on coumadin or waferin therapy is not a huge price to pay to avoid another PE. Best of luck!

Oh – and please remember to drink lots of water so as to avoid catheterization. You know they have to put that in through…well, you know where they put that in.

  125. 125. Ralan

Get better soon … we need you!

  126. 126. Tempest

Arg, didn’t check my blogs and such until just now. Sucks to be in the hospital, especially on a holiday. Hope you get better and quick, because it sucks to be sick in general.

  127. 127. Hugh

Hope you get better soon – best wishes from across the Atlantic.

If it helps perk you up, recently bought/read Crystal Rain and Ragamuffin due to you being mentioned on Whatever by John Scalzi (another fine author, imho) – so your ill health had some (very small) benefit.

  128. 128. OtherMichael

Jeez louise — this is no way to thank me for re-reading Crystal Rain last week!

(rephrased, this is good-wishes from Scranton PA, home of hard-core Buckell love, it seems….)

  129. 129. Nora

How terrible!! And on TG, no less. =( Positive vibes toward you and your family. Get well soon.

  130. 130. Fred Kiesche

    Get well!!!

  131. 131. stella

    Ugh.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery…

  132. 132. dianacacy

Oh No! Get well soon! We’re all crossing fingers, toes, and sending you good wishes here!

  133. 133. Paolo Bacigalupi

    Hang in there, man.

  134. 134. Berry

    Continued thoughts and prayers, Toby.

  135. 135. S.C. Butler

Thinking of you, Toby. Directing as much karma your way as I can.

  136. 136. Chas

Hey man, Got here from John Scalzi’s post. I haven’t read anything of yours yet, but I will as soon as I can buy some. I’ve been in the hospital suddenly for heart problems, too, and I can empathize with how you’re feeling right now.

I hope you have a speedy recovery. My good thoughts go out to you.

  137. 137. CaseyL

Renewing previous best wishes for a speedy recovery, this one with a proviso to not wear out so fast (the recovery, that is).

Hope you’re back and fightin’ fit very very soon!

  138. 138. Cynthia

This is rotten! I hope you get completely well soon.

  139. 139. Liz B

    Be well soon!

  140. 140. Maureen McHugh

Toby, everybody has said all I can say. Just doesn’t seem fair. I know that’s stupid, but there it is.

  141. 141. Harry Connolly

    Best wishes!

  142. 142. Pat Logan

Man, that sucks. Thank God they caught it in time … hope things get straightened out and you get home soon.

  143. 143. Jason M. Robertson

Once more, my best wishes on your speedy recovery, averting as much unpleasantness as possible. Truly the world seems to have it in for you this month, but soon it will be December…

  144. 144. Paul Granahan

Thoughts and prayers continue, Toby! Get well soonest!

  145. 145. Jon Hansen

Toby, weren’t you listening? We said get better!

  146. 146. Arachne Jericho

Good wishes, and hang in there.

  147. 147. Jeri Smith-Ready

So sorry to hear that, Toby. Best wishes for speedy recovery and another homecoming soon.

  148. 148. TheAdlerian

I had something like that about ten years ago, and it didn’t kill me, but it kind of should have. Happy it didn’t though, and it changed how I look at life.

Being sick sucks, but if you survive, then you’ve learned a lot about life and about suffering (unless you’re an idiot). I find myself much more empathetic and less worried about minor details.

Don’t waste time on negativity and enjoy life as it comes!

  149. 149. Laurie Mann

A shame, Toby. Hope it resolves itself soon.

  150. 150. Walter Jon Williams

What wretched news! And on a holiday weekend, too!

Strength to your arm, your heart, your spirit.

  151. 151. A Fan

Damn.. there’s a history of heart problems in my family also, so I know how frightening this can be. I’m very glad they found in time to treat it. Hang in there and get well soon Toby!

  152. 152. pixelfish

I hope they get you fixxored up soon!!!

    Be ye well.

  153. 153. Nashville Heat

Just heard about the embolism from Scalzi’s blog. I hope by now you have recovered and headed home where you belong. Here’s a prayer for you anyway. You’ve got a lot of people concerned for you, dude. That counts for something.

Oh, yeah. You might want to skip the House episodes.

  154. 154. SQT

Oh no! At least they can monitor you and make sure you’re okay in the hospital. I hope you get better soon.

  155. 155. Ruthy Charlot

I’m sorry to hear that you’re laid up, but glad to know you survived the embolism.

I’m wishing you rapid healing and total recovery.

Ugh. So sorry to hear about your health problems. Wishing you a speedy recovery, and hopefully a quick resolution of the heart issues.

Damn, Toby, this kind of stuff just shouldn’t happen. Get well soon, I’ll be thinking positive thoughts of you.

  158. 158. Joe Parrish

Just want you to get well soon.

  159. 159. Jack Kincaid

    Well, at least there’s a view…

    Get better, dammit.

  160. 160. Omaha Lisa

My thoughts and prayers are with you. Get well soon!

  161. 161. Corby Kennard

I’ll just go ahead and echo all the good sentiment on this thread. Get better soon. You have more stories to tell.

  162. 162. Rene

Shit. My fingers are crossed that you’ll get better and stay better.

  163. 163. Lynne Thomas

Yikes! I hope that you are feeling better.

Toby – you haven’t said you are home, so this must mean you’re stuck in the hospital. *dang*

Do everything they tell you and ask lots of questions. Nurses and attendants are awesome caregivers and can be your bestest friends when you are stuck in the hospital. (believe me, i know what i’m talking about here…)

I’ve managed to acquire Crystal Rain & Ragamuffin, and am enjoying the development of Pepper’s character. I waited to get them before reading Sly Mongoose. (that was a tough wait from the signing at Books & Co.)

In other news, I saw the Halo book at WalMart and Meijer’s this weekend, so people don’t have to go to an actual bookstore to buy the book! How cool is that!!!

Take care, Toby. Maybe you can practice reading your work aloud for your upcoming appearances and signings?

    hang in there, man.

  166. 166. Nick Harkaway

Hope you’re okay, Mr B. We haven’t met, but when we do, first round’s on me.

Also complicating that is fact that Thalia needs to be home tommorow since she has a cold: cough, runny nose, mild fever. 9 hrs ago

I fell asleep at 7:30pm and woke up at 12:30 due to coughing kid. Awake now. Will be interesting to see when I get tired. 9 hrs ago

Of course, I'm risking cliche. But these are the travails of being an entertainer: in realism vs keep story moving, moving wins 9 hrs ago

Mmm. The extended rise to leader of army plot sequence in this novella will be cut in favor of Duel To Death! Other way is long/boring. :) 9 hrs ago

Thalia's home today sick. Poor kid. Poor Toby's deadline LOL. 20 hrs ago
