Paris Hilton for president
So not only is this hilarious, but the moderate in me perked up at the ‘energy plan’ she proposes as being an interesting compromise, wonder who wrote her lines?
Seriously, funny though:
I snagged the video from Peter Hodges, who just reviewed Crystal Rain on his blog here:
I’ve been a little late to jump on the Tobias Buckell bandwagon. I’ve known that he falls into the same category of “new comprehensible” that Scalzi does, but his premise of a Caribbean-rooted culture in the far future never really resonated with me. Call it cultural bias, but I only reluctantly gave Crystal Rain a chance due to the fact that I didn’t find it that interesting. Oppose this culture with a reborn Aztec abomination, complete with blood sacrifice and flower wars, and my interest just dropped another notch or two.
The rave reviews kept coming in. I finally decided that I would snag the book and give it a fair shake. I’m glad I did.
Thanks for the fair shake Peter. And the Paris video.

Also complicating that is fact that Thalia needs to be home tommorow since she has a cold: cough, runny nose, mild fever. 2 mins ago
I fell asleep at 7:30pm and woke up at 12:30 due to coughing kid. Awake now. Will be interesting to see when I get tired. 3 mins ago
Of course, I'm risking cliche. But these are the travails of being an entertainer: in realism vs keep story moving, moving wins 5 mins ago
Mmm. The extended rise to leader of army plot sequence in this novella will be cut in favor of Duel To Death! Other way is long/boring. :) 7 mins ago
Thalia's home today sick. Poor kid. Poor Toby's deadline LOL. 11 hrs ago

I watched this video earlier today. I’m not a fan of Paris Hilton, but I have to say, this video showed a lot of poise and wit.
And I didn’t think it was a bad energy plan, either.
I was listening to Diane Riehm’s show today on NPR and there were energy experts discussing McCain and Obama’s plans and the word he used to describe both their plans was “incoherent.”

I saw this yesterday too and the first thing I thought was: My god, she has actually said something intelligent. And not just slightly smart, like something an average college student might say one day in their general ed class, but something smart enough that I actually wonder if it’s remotely possible that there is a brilliant human being under all that faux fab and whorishness.
Could it be that this is actually a logical compromise for the time being?

I enjoyed that. See you at the debate, bitches.

I’m just really sorry I didn’t read your book before, Tobias. I need to get over my own “cultural bias” to appreciate other works of fiction.
Truthfully, I had the same problem with Heinlein’s The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. If you’ll recall, the voice of the narrator is a little difficult to “get” at first, but the book was excellent.
I just ordered Ragamuffin from Amazon, so I should have that one read in the near future.

Well, yeah, nice plan, except for having those new technologies available in 5-10 years, and drilling offshore won’t produce oil for 10-15 years (see Big Oil’s excuses for not drilling on lands they currently hold leases to). Slight timing problem. That and offshore oil production will be somewhere around the amount we import from Ecuador (#12 importer).

yet again Paris is using events to give herself another PR boost… she’s a thinker alright
