Can you dig it? New Tor.com site launches

July 20th 2008 at 2:19 pm

The new Tor.com just went live. Stories by Charles Stross and John Scalzi, blog posts by different people, awesome art galleries.

And for one additional week, all the novels they gave away free during the entire lead-up process are here on the web. I wondered why Ragamuffin had suddenly shot up to the #70th best selling Space Opera book on Amazon.com. Looks like a handful of people checked out the free download of Crystal Rain today and ordered it.

You know, I would love it even more if they would take the concept one step further. Remember Scifi’s SciFiction website? It’d be fantastic if Tor stepped up to the plate and offered something similar, taking fiction from unknown or little known authors, giving them pro, or higher, payment and featuring them on the new Tor site, or possibly pushing to have a Tor Special Anthology of such people to be printed. I like the new Tor site, but it’s not offering too much that other sites haven’t already offered, and that’s my only beef. It’s not new to me.

It looks nice, I’m just saying it could be more and perhaps I’m a little disappointed it didn’t truly reach for the stars. The only thing that sets it apart from sites that do similar things is that its Tor rather than some random site out there.

    Maybe I’m just too negative.

Well, it’s just launched. I suspect they’ll respond to member feedback and the site will evolve accordingly. You can’t expect everything always to be exactly the way you might want it, right out of the gate. Why not send your suggestions to them?

I should send my suggestions. I think the biggest problem is whether or not it is financially viable to have a “magazine/talent search” thing. Which is sad…because it would be awesome if Tor did it and kept up with it…
