Halo: The Cole Protocol cover

July 17th 2008 at 8:40 am

Just a reminder note, this cover is an initial sketch, not the final cover after all

I need to get back to revising and wrapping up a section to show my editor today, but a few of you who’re readers AND Halo fans all emailed me that the cover had gone up on Amazon.com, and I’m quite tickled by it:

Now back to work!

eta: Hey, I was out to see a movie, but I got notice that this is actually *not* the final cover, but a draft that somehow ended up on Amazon. Explains why I wasn’t aware of it until you guys emailed me the Amazon.com link and heads up. So it’s a draft, an initial sketch.

Pretty amazing for a draft, huh?

Dang man, I’m the only person I know who doesn’t get all into Halo and you are making it too hard for me to maintain my distance when it comes to that game and universe!

I may have to fall into the Halo event horizon, just to read my favorite author. :)

Ken, go for it. You won’t regret it. It’s a very lush landscape. The boys at Bungie have done an excellent job at creating a large and diverse Haloverse.

And the cover looks gorgeous, Tobias! I can’t wait to read it. :)

  3. 3. Jon

    Ooh, pretty.

Ken, if it makes you feel better, I’ve never played Halo. Last game of Bungie’s I spent any time with was their Marathon trilogy.

  4. 4. Caleb

Cover looks great! I can’t wait to read it!!!

…and now that news of the cover art has been posted on the Halo.Bungie.Org front page: http://halo.bungie.org/news.html?item=23433

    you’re gonna get a lot more Halo-fan “opinions” :-)

I’m really looking forward to what new characters we get to meet in this one!

  6. 6. Tobias Buckell

    Heh, that’s cool.

As for the opinions, well, that’s half the fun, speculating :-)

I for one, as a hardcore Halo fan, think the cover art looks really good, and fits well with the other books in the IP (all of which I have read, and can say that Eric Nylund’s contributions to the series are some of the best SciFi I have read, much less a video game IP story) visual wise.

I’m also very interested to see the back story of Gray Team, since I was one of the people who noticed that reference and went, “Hmmm…” As for your writing, Mr. Buckell, I plan on covering the Ragamuffin books before Cole Protocol comes out to get a feel for your writing style.

I am, however, confident you will do the series justice, and that’s not a condescending comment at all, I just really think you’ve got the stuff to do well and I look forward to hearing your comments at ComiCon.

    ….awesomeness ensues…

I’m astounded by the cover. If the content beyond the cover is just as good, you, my friend, will have gained a follower.

Thanks for the vote of confidence guys!

I like Nylund’s books as well, though I have to admit Staten’s glimpses in the world behind Halo and how much he fleshed it out were a great deal of fun for me as well because I’m a world building junkie :-)

I’ve read all of the Halo books, and it excites me that you liked Staten’s Contact Harvest. If your book fleshes out the Halo universe to the same extent, then it will definitely be a hit! :D

Wow This is an awesome cover, I look forward to finding out what model of Mjolnir armor that is on the cover.

And I am gonna grab this book anyway, I love everything in the Halo Canon and look forward to learning more about Grey team.

  13. 13. Jim (TTL Demag0gue)

Huh, apparently this cover is just the initial sketch. Apparently the final product will be even more spectacular (see Ben’s news post link in comment #5)!

  14. 14. Christian

    whoa…Spartans? Spartan IV’s? I CANT WAIT!!!!!! AHHHHH!!!!!

  15. 15. Roy

Nice cover! I believe that’s Mark IV armor? Since Mark V was the first with the shields and Gray Team was to far in space to come back to Reach for it.

I am really looking forward to this book! I’m currently rereading al the Halo novels again. I have to say that I like Eric Nylunds book best (especially Fall Of Reach). Contact Harvest had great info in it, but I didn’t really like the writing style. Maybe I should pick up some of your books Mr. Buckell. I am confident you will do the series justice ;)

I have two question and I hope you can answer them:

    1) In which timeframe does the book take place? Will we read about events after the ending of Halo 3?

    2) Is there any chance we’ll read about the other Spartans besides Gray Team? (The Spartans II’s and III’s who are with Dr. Halsey in the Micro Dyson Sphere/Shield World)

I’m really looking forward to your book!

    Thanks for commenting Roy.

I can’t really answer your specific questions right now, sadly, I hope you’ll understand.

I would point you to http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Halo:_The_Cole_Protocol where they are keeping a close eye on all the details that so far have been confirmed by Tor and Bungie in press releases, and of course, if you choose to, you can keep an eye out here for links to that sort of stuff when it comes available. :-)

Jon, me too (with Marathon) and I’ve never forgiven Bungie for not letting me kill that (colorful, but not for the faint of heart explicative ramble) Durandal. I was sooo looking forward to doing that.

Tobias, you seem to have Teh Luck when it comes to cover art.

  18. 18. Maj Williams

Hey Tobias! Looking forward to reading this. The new cover looks great! I have read every novel so far and I am looking forward to see how your style of story telling will mix with the Halo Universe. If the cover is a sign at all, it would seem it is off to a good first step.

I was just wondering…Out of all of the Halo novels written, which one is your favorite?
