Other announcements, plus a Crystal Rain review!
July 11th 2008 at 1:05 am
So, for those of new to my blog, I’m usually pretty boring. My blogging theory is that I putter around, pointing out cool things that make me happy and talking about my work and what’s on my mind and so forth.
So some updates, I passed the 10% mark of the novel H:TCP in solid form, and have the next 10% in very drafty form that I’m revising and tinkering to perfect this weekend, which was nice, and am steaming along, despite all the emails and IMs pointing out this that or the other to do with the last two blog posts. Come on people, can’t we save hate filled speech for when I’m *not* under a deadline?
Free eBook interview:
There’s an interview with me about free eBooks in Bloggasm.
Rob Sawyer here has a well argued take about not forgetting to weigh the results fairly, as people do seem to get over excited about results that prove whatever point they’re hoping for.
As I said in my blog post about the free eBook, that bump was certainly there, but without being able to reveal numbers, it wasn’t the kind of bump that will lead me to go buy a new scooter, okay? I tried to relay that without releasing propriety numbers that the service I use to track numbers gave me, because, and they’re perfectly within their rights, that’s how they make their bread and butter.
Reviews of Crystal Rain and Ragamuffin:
Meanwhile, Enduring Romance has this freaking cool review of Crystal Rain on her blog that just made me happy to be a writer and writing what I write tonight:
Omigoodness, this is one of the most awesome books I’ve read so far this year. The world-building alone blows me away. I have a thing for Science Fiction which explores alien cultures anyway, yanno. One of the things which attracted me to it in the first place was the multi-cultural cast of characters. You don’t get the standard white guy hero, his big-boobed moon-tart of the week, and a token black guy along for the ride. You get as many skin tones and language accents as you do right here on planet Earth, which makes it feel a lot more real to me.
LJ user Rilina also takes a look at Crystal Rain and Ragamuffin and enjoyed them, but also has an interesting critique at the end (with a twist take on the nature of Nashara that I’d never even considered and was a good point).
Mid Ohio Con:
I will be a guest at Mid Ohio Con this October. Details in the jump.
Comic Con:
I’ll be at Comic Con in a couple weeks or so. at 2:00 I’m doing a panel with Bungie folk there:
2:15-3:15 Halo Wars and the Halo Universe—Prima Games, Tor Books, McFarlane Toys, and Microsoft Games Studio bring you an in-depth panel discussion on all things Halo. Panelists include Eric Nylund, author of Halo: The Fall of Reach and Halo: First Strike Onyx; Tobias Buckell, author of the upcoming novel Halo: The Cole Protocol; game universe writers Graeme Devine (Halo Wars) and Frank O’Connor (Halo Trilogy); and Jon Goff and Corrinne Robinson, McFarlane Toys’ brand management team for Halo action figures. Room 6A
I’ll also be doing a discussion about the future at 10 AM on Saturday, and signing at 11 AM with a bunch of writers including Charles Stross.

Wow, I love that Enduring Romance review! I’d be floating if someone said something like that about something I’d written.
Good for you and Crystal Rain!

Huhn, see usually I finally carve out some time to write, get myself rev’ed up, get all the juices flowing, and then the day job or night job reaches out, grabs all that hope by the scruff of the neck, shakes and throws it in the dust. I figured if I ever got to just do the writing thing, much of that would go away. Guess there’s always some time-stealing demon waiting for you out there, no matter what you do.
Glad to know it’s not only my life that does that.

Kimber An from Enduring Romance is being interviewed today over at Galaxy Express, and CRYSTAL RAIN was recommended in the comments. Also, as an add-on to that discussion is a new group at Shelfari for Science Fiction Romance. One of the first discussions is regarding a preference for more non-white main characters. CRYSTAL RAIN is being suggested as instead of an example of girl-meets-alien (as opposed to girl-meets-boy).
