Green Man Review’s best of 2007
March 28th 2008 at 12:04 pm
The latest issue of Green Man Review’s latest issue has book and movie reviews and so forth, but it also has a ‘Best of 2007‘ list, where they’ve asked a number of people involved with books what they liked best in 2007. It includes a quick note from me about what I enjoyed reading, my first being:
For a while there I was starting to think I was the only person in SF/F that had read Max Brook’s World War Z, but I’m seeing it talked about now. It’s a zombie novel, but its told via a series of interviews with people after the war against the zombies, and it’s a completely fascinating and well done book. Surprisingly so, it is probably my favorite book of the year. Other books that entirely got a lot of love from me:

Well I’m not “in” sci-fi (er, I don’t think) but I thought WWZ was great. The audio version is fun too, lots of well-known folks lending their voices.
WWZ is almost a “disaster” book in a lot of ways… more about how our institutions try (and fail spectacularly) to cope with a pandemic then about braining zombies.
Though there is some good zombie-braining as well.

I read–and loved–World War Z as well, and thanks to my girlfriend’s employee discount at (chain bookstore), we also got a copy of the audiobook. Though it’s abridged, it’s chock full of people like Alan Alda, Rob Reiner, and Mark Hamill (as Todd Wainio), and it is totally awesome.
Hollywood’s apparently making a film, so hopefully they won’t botch it too badly.

The audio book sounds cool, I’ll have to tell my wife about it.
A film. I’m nervous. It could be good, it could be horrible. The novel is epistolary, so it works as fiction really well to convey the range of human reaction. But it’s not a straight a-b story!
