Ask a question
January 29th 2008 at 12:17 pm
Since I’m somewhat busy this week and might be fairly unoriginal in blogging, why not ask a question in the comments section here, and I’ll answer it as a blog post?

Since you teach writing also, what is different about the techniques you try to get your students to use as compared to your own style of creating stories?

Why did you decide to incorporate certain aspects of the Aztec(a) culture in your adventurous Science-Fiction novels? What interested you in these cultures to begin with?
Thanks in for answering.

When you sold Crystal Rain, did you mention it was part of a series in your query? (I’m gonna cheat a little here and ask 2) Could you share your query with your blog viewing audience? Thanks.

Mark, ask John Scalzi or his daughter, they both have a well researched answer for that.

Hey Toby,
Here’s an off-topic convo-question.
Of course, it depends on if you’ve read the Sword of Truth novels by Terry Goodkind.
They announced last year that Sam Raimi was going to bring the novels to the tv, a novel a year (season). Sounded great. Showtime could rock that series. Ahem, it was mentioned today that Disney/ABC will be airing it. Now I’m thinking it might become Hercules/Xena/Richard Cypher schlock. Do you think they can pull it off on primetime? Personally, I don’t. [rant mode off]

Do you have any advice for trying to convince my University (UC Santa Cruz) to bring in SF writers like yourself, Robert J. Sawyer, etc. in to do small lectures/speeches/etc.? (I ask this because, well, I really want to see some SF or F people come down here and do some speeches, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen any time soon…they were really unenthusiastic about Robert J. Sawyer even though the guy is sort of really important in the SF field right now…he was published in Science and has been on Canadian television for banana’s sake!)

Mark, I already answered that one on my blog.
It’s said that the futurian, new wave, cyberpunk and radical SF movements have never outglimmered Campbell’s golden age revolution. So my question is (if anything) what will?

A question that we’ve discussed via email: Your post on how you write was done before you switched to Scrivener. How do you use it, and how has that changed how you write? (Or has it?)

When do you retire (or trunk) a short story? I’m staring at my list of stories, and only a few of them I think are good. Should I trust my own instinct, or maybe I’m not best placed to judge them? Quite a few have been through my crit group, and none have been trashed.
I thought I’ve read you answering this before, but I can’t find the answer.

Hrmm…any question, huh? Let’s see…something easy this time.
Do you believe that there has been a growing tendency among readers to segregate themselves into “genre” camps in recent years? If so, what do you think might be the causes behind this?

I second Chris’s question. I just started using Scrivener myself.
