Greg Van Eekhout’s NorseCODE

January 31st 2008 at 5:06 pm

I got to read some early fragments of Greg Van Eekhout’s in progress novel NorseCode a couple years ago and just really dug it, and I got to read a larger chunk this last summer and continued adoring on it, so I’m totally psyched to see that Greg not only got an agent recently but […]

Dissing SF

January 31st 2008 at 4:00 pm

Rob Sawyer’s getting tired of SF being dissed:
I can understand people dissing SF out of ignorance, but why people would diss it at the same time they’re coming to an SF writer for a favour is utterly beyond me.

Ask me a question: differing techniques

January 31st 2008 at 3:35 pm

Doug Triplett asked in my ‘ask a question‘ comment thread:
Since you teach writing also, what is different about the techniques you try to get your students to use as compared to your own style of creating stories?
I don’t formally teach writing so much as act as a mentor to students who are writing. When I […]

Bookstove review of Crystal Rain

January 30th 2008 at 3:44 pm

Lit website Bookstove has a review of Crystal Rain here:
This is an exciting and imaginative debut from author Tobias S. Buckell. The story features characters that are carefully nuanced and thus, wholly believable. The ending, though logical, is truly heartbreaking . The main message that Buckell delivers is that things are not always as they […]

Short story sale: Resistance to Seeds of Change

January 30th 2008 at 1:54 am

Went to bed early and tired and the storms here in the mid-West woke me up just before 2am. Whereupon I checked my email and found that my short story about computer-modeled benevolent dictatorships “Resistance” sold to the anthology Seeds of Change, edited by John Joseph Adams. The anthology should be out in early summer […]

Ask a question

January 29th 2008 at 12:17 pm

Since I’m somewhat busy this week and might be fairly unoriginal in blogging, why not ask a question in the comments section here, and I’ll answer it as a blog post?

Hyai!

January 29th 2008 at 11:07 am

I’ve mentioned struggling to get back into the fitness groove, particularly since freelancing, and mainly since the end of summer. Emily was a good early morning workout partner this summer, and we did great together as I got back into the groove. But then, as is usual for me, I fell off the wagon for […]
