Work ethic
Jeff VanderMeer has an amazing post where he posts his freelance work schedule, involved getting up at 7:15…
7:15 – 7:45: Exercise bike (excellent opportunity to read books for review)
8:00: Breakfast of four eggs and two pieces of wheat toast
8:30 – 11:30: Writing of first-draft fiction in longhand, sometimes at a coffee shop (nothing takes more mental energy for me, so preferably must be fresh…or do it late at night, sometimes), with some book review writing on the tail end of that time if I run out of fiction inspiration
I do need to work more exercise into my life, but right now mine works something like this:
somewhere between 10am to 11:45am – wake up
12:00-lunch (breakfast?) with friend
1:00-2:00pm-blip through email, read rss feeds
2-4pm-blog for pay, blog for me, freelance articles, any administrivia
4-6pm-editing for pro blog position
6-12midnight-dinner, hang out with wife, house stuff
midnight-4 or 5am-write fiction, write articles, write write write
And that’s pretty flexible, other than the 4-6 editing shift, I may stay up later, go to bed earlier, etc.
I’m up a bit late at 5:30am here because I ended up outlining a short story in excruciating detail.
The one thing I do need to do is get a definite work out schedule. I’ve been flailing around since leaving the dayjob to get into a regular pattern there. The basement being redone (slowly) has also meant I don’t have a space down there, but I could like, you know, play Wii boxing everyday, I just am not prioritzing properly…

Mine pretty closely resembles a 9-5 job, but it’s helpful to remember that I have 2 school-age kids and my wife works 7:00 to 3:30, so a lot of the morning routine is my job.
I’m up at 6:30 keeping oldest son company.
7:15-7:45–checking e-mail, touching base w/blogs
7:45–get youngest son up, breakfast, off to school, walk dog
9:00–work on fiction du jour
10:15ish–go to gym and workout, then have lunch
12:30ish–walk dog
1:00ish–work until done for the day, 5 or 6, depending on what’s going on and impending deadlines.
I’ll also work evenings and weekends (often at least do some fiction writing on the weekends) as needed.

I need to schedule my life back in (and more time for writing).
