Hugo-riffic!

September 1st 2007 at 9:35 pm

The results are in for the Hugo Award, the fan-voted, and probably biggest award in the field! First of all, super big congratulations to Tim Pratt for winning the Hugo for the short story category.

One of the great moments I’ve had over the last two years was to meet Vernor Vinge, a writer I have much admiration for. I enjoyed reading Rainbow’s End and was happy to see it win.

Emily and I are both pleased that Pan’s Labyrinth won, we really like it. Both Gordon Van Gelder and Patrick Nielsen Hayden are amazing editors, kudos to them.

Frank Wu rocked the Fan Artist category, yay Frank.

I was amazed to hear Scalzi almost won the best Fan Writer category. Go Scalzi!

I found the link to the nominations breakdown here and got a couple surprises. The first was that Crystal Rain was in the top 10 nominations for Hugo Award for novel category. Wow, thank you everyone who nominated me. David Louis Edelman points out:

Dude, you got more nominations for the Hugo this year than James Morrow, Robert Heinlein, Gene Wolfe, and Cormac McCarthy. That’s gotta feel good.

Yeah, just ahead of me are Sun of Suns by my very good friend Karl Schroeder, Farthing by Jo Walton, Jennifer Morgue by Stross, and Lies of Lock Lamora. Very awesome books and people. I duke it out for spot #10 with Wintersmith by Terry Pratchett and The Ghost Brigades by John Scalzi.

Any day I see myself on the same list as Pratchett and Scalzi I’m happy, yeah.

Also fun, my second surprise, was that I got a few nominations for Fan Writer in that list. Again, I’m always honored that people think of my writing as worthy, so for those who voted, my thanks.

And, again, Tobias, you’re keeping good company there. With the most nominations? How great is that. I mean, anybody can vote on a ballot, but the people nominating really like the books.

Those statues this year, by the way, are excellent. The Hugo rocket AND Ultraman! This might be dating me but I remember the first TV series of Ultraman. One of the happy memories of childhood.
