BoingBoing points out SFWA DMCA misuse
August 31st 2007 at 3:43 am
*sigh*
Not everything is a nail when you have a hammer, and the writers organization for SF writers I belong to, SFWA, has a vice president obsessed with doing his best to make SFWA look identical to the RIAA.
The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America has used the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to fraudulently […]
The DVD extras theory of reading fiction
August 30th 2007 at 3:19 pm
I post about the flaws in the ways I perceive current education of fiction reading over at SF Novelists today.
What I quickly found out was that the DVD extras didn’t add all that much for me. I’m sure they could, but I found that the director loudly talking over all the neat parts of the […]
Hongguo ship names
August 30th 2007 at 8:20 am
In a piece of reader mail today:
I’m curious about your names for the Hongguo and their ships. I’m studying Mandarin right now, and my girlfriend is from Beijing. For “Hongguo,” among others, that could mean “Red Government” to “Magnificent Empire.” Chinese is a language of homonyms, and trying to figure out […]
Reviews today, writing tip also
August 29th 2007 at 2:25 pm
Today saw three reviews all pop up. Sorry about the all-book all the time channel there, I just wanted to link them before I forgot about them.
I love this quote about Ragamuffin by Heather of Errant Dreams:
Surprises and revelations flow naturally and aren’t used to artificially ratchet up the tension or bolster the pace. This […]
Errant Dreams reviews Ragamuffin
August 29th 2007 at 2:17 pm
Errant Dreams was completely drawn in by Ragamuffin, saying that she kept reading it instead of something else she had planned. That’s a good reaction! Snip:
Once again, where do I start? Tobias Buckell has created a grand and fascinating universe within the pages of Ragamuffin. He clearly excels at universe-building and character creation; everything he […]
Dusk Before Dawn on Crystal Rain
August 29th 2007 at 2:14 pm
Blogger Larry Ketchersid on Crystal Rain:
Reader’s read with many motivations. Sometimes you read for entertainment, for the plot; sometimes to be intellectually stimulated (big words), for the ideas. When I want to read to laugh out loud, I pick up a Christopher Moore tome.
I’ll now add Mr. Buckell to the list of authors who write […]
Fantasy and Sci-Fi Lovin’ Book Review of Crystal Rain
August 29th 2007 at 2:11 pm
Fantasy and Sci-Fi Lovin’ Book Review tackles Crystal Rain. Some snips:
The strength of the novel lies in its world building and it is first rate.
…
I kind of got the feeling that this is something of a guys book. You know us women, always wanting to know what’s going on; wanting to talk about it. This […]
The intellectual desert of the blog while under deadline
August 29th 2007 at 12:34 am
I have little titles and notes and ideas for meaty, thoughtful, blog entries scribbled down in my scratchpad and on my sticky notes on the laptop, thoughts about writing, the world, technology, and so on, and in order to be a good writer-monkey, I have to deny it all to you because THERE IS ONLY […]
Wastelands website
August 28th 2007 at 3:01 am
Wastelands, the reprint anthology of post-apacolyptic SF that John Joseph Adams put together, has a very extensive and nifty website here, also put together by John.
The site features notes by the authors, samples of the fiction to be found in the book, and all sorts of other goodies. The anthology comes out in January.
Perfect casting
August 27th 2007 at 3:37 pm
According to SF Signal Keanu (dude!) Reaves is set to star as the robot in a remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still.
Keanu Reaves as a robot is such inspired casting. It’s like casting Arnold as the robot in Terminator.
