Klausner reviews Ragamuffin

April 30th 2007 at 2:59 am

As I said in December of 2005, “Harriet Klausner is one of the most prolific, and enthusiastic reviewers out there (see this Wired story about her), and she’s usually very focused on the positive.”

If Klausner reviews your book, she is usually excited about it, she doesn’t do negative reviews.

Guaranteed positive review aside, her review of Ragamuffin that just got posted is still pretty cool:

This is an exhilarating outer space opera that never slows down especially during the latter quarter of the action-packed story line. That climax is one of the longest most exciting cat and mouse chase scenes in recent years. Nash is a superb heroine, part comic book superhero (and part futuristic humanoid. The Satrap are actually the more fascinating species with their “White Man’s Burden” syndrome that what they do to lesser species is for the other race’s good and much better than what that less significant group can do for themselves. Readers who appreciate a testosterone (even though Nash is a woman) science fiction thriller starring a super female heroine will want to join the Raga in space as “Davidette” battles Goliath.

She does seem to have picked up on all the little themes and things I think make this book interesting.

Cool review. Congrats, Tobias, Ragamuffin looks to be even a larger smash than Crystal Rain. It’s all that hard work and perserverance paying dividends.

On the one hand, Harriett’s probably no more or less qualified to review anything than anybody else on the planet.

The other hand, being, of course, that she reviews so damn many books, almost always positively, that most people in the industry raise their eyebrows, at the very least.

Still, a good review, isn’t it?

Exactly, Mark. I don’t put much stock in her reviews, for the reason you mentioned, but she actually did a good job of fingering why I think the book is good, so I’m happy to excerpt it here.

The publisher’s weekly review will get blogged here tomorrow morning, that was good as well and has me a lot more excited :-)
