Second Life writer presence
March 20th 2007 at 2:54 am
Science Fiction writers, are you on Second Life? This is one of the most vibrant virtual communities online, and it’s really cool. If you have any familiarity with this, please drop a line in the comments. I want to organize a virtual SF author area, one where we might continuously keep a presence, or a place where we meet on a certain day of the week to talk about our work and answer questions and pal around with Second Lifers for the hell of it.
I have some rough ideas after exploring and getting a feel for the place over the last month or so. I imagine there are others better oriented than I am. If IBM and other companies have Second Life stores, it would be fun to do some similar stuff, hosting readings in a certain place (so people would expect and come to look for events in a pavilion or something) and what not.
Anyone in? Let’s rap.

I’ve been on SL for a few months. Look for me there as Vladimir Valeeva.
With regard to an SF place, you should talk with Bud Sparhawk. He’s a SL enthusiast (lured me in to it) and has been pushing the metaphor of SL as providing an artists’ colony for SF authors.
Authors Steve Miller and Sharon Lee (of Liaden Universe fame) are also very active there.

I would be on SL…
But World of Warcraft already owns my soul…
But yeah, Bud Sparhawk is an amazing source of knowledge about SL. We spent a lot of time discussing SL vs. WoW and the pros and cons of both at Context last fall. Very cool stuff.

All right, Buckell. Listen up. I’m about to google Second Life since I know nothing of it. If this turns out like Scrivener . . . If I get hooked . . . I’m giving your name to my wife. It will be your fault. Not mine.

Warren Ellis (nsfw) is very active in Second Life, and even writes about it for Reuters. He’s tried a bunch of writing-related stuff there, including creating and distributing machines that dispense in-game copies of his stories and stuff. He’s probably a good guy to talk to about this.

You are doomed, David Chunn. I do not even know you, but I know this. You are doomed.

Cory Doctorow used to be in-world at Second Life; don’t know if he still hangs out there. He’s Cory Doctorow in-world. Who knows, maybe the Lindens will let you have your own name for SL too, although there’s a whole tribe of Doctorows. You might end up with a tribe too!

We could all be the Buckells, and have our own language.
“Bucken’ A, dudes.”
“How much is that?” “A few Buckells.”
But, heck, I don’t have time for my first life, I wouldn’t have time for Second Life.

It looks awesome. I’m really interested in signing up…but have to admit, I’m a little scared. I see my life slipping away through the modem. I’ll have to write a good-bye note before I join.

Okay, I’ll fling you guys some emails
10. Mfitz on Mar 21st, 2007 at 2:10 pm
I’ve never hear of Second Life, but I like your idea. If you are open to the underpublished I’d be interested.

Not only am I in Second Life, I run a company that develops in Second Life. Ken Brady and Adam Rakunas are part of the team, too. We developed Second Talk, Second Life’s first integrated voice app, we’re working with Fortune 500 companies, hell, we’ve even been selected over other metaverse developers because we’re science fiction writers!
I decried the state of Second Life science fiction a few months ago here: http://xcentric.com/2007/01/13/on-science-fiction-and-second-life/
Love the idea of a writers’ collective. With very few writers/publishers, we could control an island or a region and provide a virtual meeting space for science fiction writers and editors from around the world.
SL is the IDEAL environment for science fiction writers, fans, and proto-fans. We should not only all be there, we should dominate the place!
So here you go: if we get enough people/publishers/aliens/whatever to pay the setup cost and ongoing land fees (currently $295/month for an island, $195/month for a mainland region), we’ll be happy to do the build for free. And provide marketing support afterwards.
IM me in-world sometime: Fallon Winnfield.

Second Life is a lot of fun, and a timesuck. It’s a great platform for SF writers. I’ve been in since last year, and I’m amazed how few SF writers I run into, and how little they leverage it for marketing of SF. There are millions of SL residents.
I, along with some other SF people, am working on a few projects that should be of interest to the community. More when that happens!
I’m there as Neko Longduk (but I’m not a furry; don’t worry). Say hi if you see me.
13. Ken Brady on Mar 21st, 2007 at 4:25 pm
Ah yes. Jason Stoddard and Adam Rakunas are those people.
14. Adam Rakunas on Mar 21st, 2007 at 4:35 pm
And I go by Adam Rakosi in-world.
15. Simon Haynes on Mar 21st, 2007 at 6:59 pm
I’m on there as Simon Richardson, which is just a free account I set up last year. I looked around a bit but it didn’t interest me - I mean, sitting in chairs for hours on end to earn pocket money? I do that in real life when I’m writing!
16. Mfitz on Mar 22nd, 2007 at 7:22 am
I checked it out yesterday and my laptop’s not up to it. Wrong graphics card and stuff like that. Rats. It looks sort of fun so maybe after my next upgrade
17. Lou Anders on Mar 24th, 2007 at 5:32 pm
I created an account last week. I’m still finding my way around, and it is a timesink, but I’m intrigued.
18. Tobias Buckell on Mar 25th, 2007 at 3:12 am
Lou, cool! It might well be a time sink, but it seems like a cool way to find new readers and do something sfnal and cool
19. Luc Reid on Apr 2nd, 2007 at 5:36 pm
Tobias, I’m interested, although I spend a limited amount of time in Second Life these days. My avatar is Lucas Gealach, and I’ve been on for about six months. I developed a system for Second Life theater companies to deliver lines and orchestrate performances (since otherwise actors have to type or cut-and-paste their lines) and have a small haven in the sky. If we need an informal gathering place, my Second Life home could be it.
I’m also writing a virtual reality novel that takes a lot of inspiration from Second Life and real life uses of virtual reality.

I’m Morrhys Graysmark in Second Life (SL). SL gave me an idea for a fictional blog, and it’s working out pretty well. I agree SL is a great place for SF, and I really appreciate the comments above because I haven’t found enough SF there yet to suit me! I did get published in SLiterary, the new literary journal in SL. You can access it in-world at English Village (22,142,124) or over the internet at http://sliterary.com. I look forward to seeing you in SL!

I’m online at SL and I’m developing a Second Life Center for Speculative Fiction. It’s still a work in progress, but eventually, I’ll have a reading room with links to various speculative fiction websites and a “transporter room” to different spec fiction places in-world.
I also have a monthly meeting in world for writers of speculative fiction. Its the second tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. SLT at
