Next week topics, and get featured in the Buckellcast

March 2nd 2007 at 4:59 pm

1) Hit me up with some topics you’d like me to talk about, either here in the blog or in the Buckellcast, which should go out earlier next week than later.

2) If you’d like to be on the Buckellcast, video yourself giving me one sentence saying who you are and what your favorite book is and why, and then say ‘and this is the Buckellcast.’ Extra points for pronouncing my name right. Upload the video by youtube or however you want, even email it to me if you’d like.

3) What are you doing this weekend? I’m thinking I’m going to paint a room.

4) My novel progress and charity update thingy. I missed $56 worth of words this week. I have no idea what the total novel length is, I am still in the process of moving to my new MacPro (which will be featured on the next Buckellcast), and I have to go buy a new hard drive because I dropped the old PowerMac’s hard drive and when I plugged it in it began to smolder. Please vote in the comments on where I send the $56.

Tobias you ask, didn’t you talk about backing up your data not too long ago. Do you practice your preaching?

Well, like many people who preach, I am only somewhat a follower of my own entreatments. I do a big back up once a quarter, and that’s my main deal as I’m terribly absent minded about these things. However, most projects I’m working on get emailed back and forth using my gmail account, so everything is being pieced back together by combing through some emails.

I am piecing Sly Mongoose back together with fragments emailed back and forth to myself, and it doesn’t look like anything’s lost.

I’ll find out tomorrow what the total wordcount is.

    1) I’d like to hear about how you develop your plots - are you more of a brick-by-brick builder? do you prefer to make the outer mold and use that cool expando-foam and just see what happens? something else entirely?

    2) Maybe when I’ve hit a steak of good hair days I’ll submit a video, but I’m ok with living in visual (and audio) anonymity for now. :) I’ll be sure to pronounce your name right if I ever do send you something, at any rate.

    3) I’m having 12 people over for dinner Saturday night (thank heaven for potlucks!) and then we start packing for our move in two weeks. Wish I could paint a room without getting a penalty from the apt. complex.

    4) I think you should donate the $56 to your local women’s abuse shelter, or call to see what supplies they need and use the money to buy it for them and deliver.

Stinky stinky on losing the hard drive, but woohoo gmail! That’s my most common backup method as well, sorry to say, though I’m programming my computer calendar to pop up a reminder every month to backup to a cd in addition.

    Ta ta!

Mmm a good hair steak. Pass the A-1!

    Definitely meant a “streak”. What can I say? I’m a blond. :)

You need SuperDuper! You schedule it to back up specified folders on a regular basis, and it does its thing in the background. It’s really easy to use, and it saved my butt at work a couple of weeks ago.

For this week, I would vote for the local Hospice.

And you should have backup before moving the HD, or changing computers. That should have been one of those big notice times to just make a backup. Just like when updating the OS. Glad you did have a “backup” with gmail.

I vote for Habitat. Rebuilding NOLA is still going on, and they need all the funds they can get.

As for topics, I dunno. How about the best and worst parts of life as a writer for you personally? What do you really enjoy, and what really makes your day when it happens in regards to writing? What bugs the heck out of you?

As for backups: in June last year, I bought a Network Attached Storage device and stuck four 300GB drives in it, in a RAID. I semi-regularly back my personal directories up to it, and it sits quietly in my basement keeping my data secure. It’s brought a lot of peace of mind!
