Confusion 2007

I spent the weekend at the science fiction convention Confusion, where I hung out with various super-cool people.

One of the fun highlights was meeting Mark Terry. Mark is a fellow freelancer, author, and brother of a former office colleague, so it was cool to meet him in person. Our quick lunch was interrupted by Jim Frenkel, but that was okay because Jim got us lunch and Mark and he seemed to hit it off together.

John Scalzi and I caught up a bit, and John gave me crap for not hopping in the car to drive down and have lunch with him sometime. I really need to get my crap in gear and do that sometime, I only live an hour north. John was nice enough to give me a ride back down to Lima, as Emily had to leave early on Sunday morning to organize a baby shower for a friend of hers.

Karl Schroeder and Janice and his daughter Paige are long time friends and it was great to see them. David Klecha was being a single dad for the weekend, though the baby Tony did not seem to have a high critical opinion of the fife and drum crew in the lobby. I also bumped into Catherine Schafer, Anne Harris, Sarah Zettel, Steven Harper Piziks, and other awesome area writers.

I briefly met PZ Myers of Pharyngula, a blogger I quite respect and admire who was there as Science Guest of Honor, so that was a neat treat.

If you live in the metro-Detroit area, you should have a chance to see some of the writers (including yours truly) there being interviewed by the ever-cool Jim Hall. Details as I get them.

Confusion is one of my favorite local cons, and I’m certainly planning on being back next year.

It was a great conference to hang out with people. I certainly enjoyed myself. And after meeting Jim Frenkel, the second Tor editor I’m meet in person, I so want to be published by Tor. Besides publishing the authors I respect and admire, they have great people working there.
