End of a year
December 31st 2006 at 5:00 pm
It’s been a pretty wild year for me. In summary:
My grandfather passed away February 1st after a long couple months.
On February 3rd, not long after coming back from the memorial, my contract at my dayjob was cancelled. I was expected to work until late August and train a co-worker to replace me.
Saw my first novel […]
Sadam Hussein dead

Sic semper tyrannus.
Shame about the odd trial, which contorted itself to avoid charging Saddam with some of the stuff he did during the period he was closely allied with the US, which will give US opponents and haters more easy ammunition to martyr Saddam, however.
But either way, he was pretty clearly a horrible person.
Iraqi blogs
December 29th 2006 at 6:39 pm
I remember when the Iraq war started, and it seemed that the blogosphere was so excited about the proliferation of Iraqi blogs. Particularly the conservative blogosphere. Now among many conservative blogs I keep in my feed reader I rarely see the daily linkage and excitement about Iraqi blogging.
It could be because its old news, it […]
Holiday grumps
December 28th 2006 at 5:28 pm
I came down sick right after Christmas. Oddly enough I haven’t gotten full-symptom sick since I turned to freelancing. I imagine the ability to just go take a nap when I was running ragged staved off a lot of the Ohio bugs I fall sick to.
So Emily has put up with my impression of a […]
Bookgasm gives Crystal Rain a top 5 nod
December 28th 2006 at 12:44 pm
The book review site Bookgasm was kind enough to rank Crystal Rain as one of the top 5 SF/F books written last year:
CRYSTAL RAIN is a bloody, satisfying adventure that only provides a glimpse of the world Buckell’s created. Some more, please.
Also on the list, John Scalzi, Ian McDonald, Kim Stanley Robinson, and Joel Shepherd/David […]

What’s your favorite Christmas moment?
John Scalzi’s very Merry Christmas gift
December 23rd 2006 at 3:19 pm
Scalzi gets a whole page in the NY Times Book Review section. Awesome!
Here are John Scalzi’s comments on the neat event.
Of course I thought the summary was a bit bullshit:
And if he uses that work to articulate a firm position on the political issues that will inevitably define his historical moment, take a stance that […]
Happy Holidays and misc.
December 22nd 2006 at 9:37 am
I’m not sure what you are all planning to do, and I do I hope it is fun and rewarding and makes some seasonal memories, but tomorrow begins the driving around to family for us in the Buckell household. It’s grey, and wet, and not very merry out. As a result, it doesn’t feel like […]
Article about the Dabel Brothers
December 21st 2006 at 11:22 am
The Dabel Brothers are the guys who will be turning Crystal Rain into a graphic novel. As I mentioned when I broke the news, I am pretty excited to see Crystal Rain translated into that format. I think it is pretty suited to it.
The New York Daily News just recently ran a story all about […]
Small Italian village uses mirror to get sunlight
December 21st 2006 at 6:00 am
In SF the idea of using mirrors to get sunlight into the middle of a space colony is fairly well known as a design idea. The idea of repurposing beams of light with mirrors seems very SF-nal, so it’s really cool to see it happen on a small scale in Italy right now.
The village of […]
