Oh Caffeine

November 30th 2005 at 11:29 pm

This is the end of my third caffeine-free day. I usually quit every summer, or over winter break, but last weekend I was struggling with the reaction I have to drinking soda, and particularly caffeinated soda (I have very bad acid reflux).

Then there is usually some crisis that leads me back to it.

But sometimes it […]

Worldwired

November 30th 2005 at 12:41 pm

And because I missed it yesterday, Elizabeth Bear’s Worldwired came out today (well in my odd world, it actually launched yesterday, forgive me, I’m behind in my blog reading :-).

My friends need to stop being so successful all in the same time frame, I’m having trouble keeping up.

Hear Me Read

November 30th 2005 at 12:24 pm

I have shameless mercantile plugs for you all:

Alex Wilson has a deal up at Tell Tale Weekly. You can hear my story Trinkets, as read by me, and my story All Her Children Fought, as read by Mary Robinette Kowal, together for a buck.

Other audio fiction at Tell Tale Weekly you can slap on your […]

Woah

November 30th 2005 at 12:11 pm

Just ran through my junk mail folder and spotted an email from my agent in there sent to me yesterday in reply to a quick request. I’ve been more aggressive in tagging mail as junk for my bayesian filter, but spammers are adding literature in the bottom of their file to get around this, and […]

Rangergirl

November 30th 2005 at 9:18 am

Fellow Clarion ‘99 grad Tim Pratt’s first novel officially launches today. It comes with a cool pre-weathered cover and if you amble on over to Pratt’s official page for Rangergirl (that’s the title of the book), you can read a story related to the book.

At the very least pop into his latest post and wish […]

Synopsis

November 29th 2005 at 2:47 pm

Jennifer Crusie talks about writing synopsis in Stalking the Wild Editor: How to Get Published, Maybe

But here’s the catch. Editors work for publishing houses and publishing houses are businesses and businesses have to make money or they fold. Which means editors have to choose books that will make money or they’ll get fired. Overall, this […]

Naked Cowboy

November 29th 2005 at 9:05 am

In New York at Times Square we spotted the Naked Cowboy, this buff dude in nothing but tightey-whities that stands around and sings at people and who you pay to get a picture with. He reminds me of Trash-man in St. Thomas, this dude with cans and cleaned up trash taped all over his clothes, […]

An Appreciation

November 28th 2005 at 12:47 pm

When Sci Fiction closed, a number of saddened authors lamented, and out of this a project grew to create a site that housed appreciations of various wonderful stories that Ellen Datlow had purchased there over the last six years.

I’d love to add one, but don’t have time to do long, thoughtful posts like everyone else […]

Alternate Income Streams

November 28th 2005 at 11:48 am

Short-short Stories by Bruce Holland Rogers. For $5 a year you can have a short story in your inbox every week or so. Bruce posts that he has 608 readers.

608 readers times $5 a year is about (roughly) $3000/year. He says his short stories average about 1,000 words. So with short stories averaging 1000 […]

Sweet and sour

November 27th 2005 at 7:11 pm

I’m not a huge fan of sweet and sour sauce, but Emily just made some that was good. The recipe is here. She snagged it from Simply Ming, a PBS cooking show we had on while vegging out yesterday and reading books.
