Alpha Workshop

July 29th 2004 at 7:55 am

I’ve been invited to be a guest author/lecturer at the 10 day Alpha Workshop for young writers that is put on in conjunction with the Confluence convention in Pittsburgh. I’m not sure of the other attendees or exact dates just yet, but I’ll keep everyone updated.

Teching It

July 28th 2004 at 9:11 am

The college is sending me to a tech conference free. It’s today through Friday in Columbus. I’m going to be missing some stuff that’s midday, as I have to get my car fixed to drive there. Anyway, I’ll be there until Friday, so I doubt I’ll be updating here.

Headphones Redux

July 27th 2004 at 6:52 pm

So… the headphones arrived. They were somewhat comfortable, sounded as good as my current set. I put them on, started checking out the sound quality, and they snapped in half on my head.
What the fuck?
So I’m packing them back up, will mail them back for a refund sometime soon.
Annoying.

Preliminary NorEasCon Schedule

July 27th 2004 at 10:50 am

The preliminary schedule came through for this year’s worldcon. Looks interesting. I have to contact the registrar’s office at Bluffton and double check to make sure there isn’t a class on Friday that I have to teach. There are some items on Monday that are on here that I have cut off, as I’ll have […]

Con Report: Confluence

July 26th 2004 at 7:37 pm

So Confluence was a blast. Got to hang out with various cool people of all sorts while there, like Michael Kandel and his wife Margie, who were cool. Bud Sparhawk and Lawrence Connolly and Charles Oberndorf were there, as well as Timons Esaias, who gave me some useful tips about foreign markets that I needed. […]

Island Stories

July 26th 2004 at 6:52 pm

This is a ’ship’s log’ of the Windom, which kinda gives you an idea of the kind of people I grew up around. This is what it is like to live on a boat in the islands. At least, it’s their experience.
The entry I linked you to is of an encounter with a shipwrecked dude. […]

New Headphones

July 23rd 2004 at 1:13 am

Just because I like getting packages…

No, just kidding. Someone at one of the workshops was nice enough to give me an Amazon gift certificate as a hosting gift which was a really neat gesture, and I’ve been trying to figure out what fun toy to put it towards for a while. I was up at […]

Damn Research

July 22nd 2004 at 3:04 pm

Stayed up until 3:30am last night researching pre 20th century armies, army logistics, statistics, pre 20th century civilization population and demographics, all of which to create plausible guesses about some cold hard facts needed for Crystal Rain.
Got up at 7:30.
I am so tired…
But the book will now proceed to kick even more ass.
And I feel […]

Confluence Appearance and Schedule

July 21st 2004 at 3:31 pm

This weekend I will be appearing at the Pittsburgh Science Fiction Convention (a gathering of writers and fans and various others who interact about all things SF and related) called Confluence. Below is my schedule, and I hope that if you’re in the Pittsburgh area you’ll be able to come out and say hi or […]

StuntShipOne

July 21st 2004 at 12:26 pm

Jeffrey Bell dashes some cold water on all the excitement about SpaceShipOne’s achievement:
SpaceShipOne has unleashed yet another wave of wishful thinking by the alt.space community. The same people who enthused over DC-X, X-33, and Rotary Rocket are at it again, filling cyberspace with claims that SS1 is the first successful private spaceship and will usher […]
