That Dude From Ben & Jerry’s Again

January 30th 2004 at 9:31 am

So ya’ll expressed amusement for my signing up at True Majority.org, here’s the letter I got (from that Ben dude himself! Well, his autoresponder that is…)

Dear Tobias Buckell,

OK. So you saw something about TrueMajority somewhere or you responded
to one of our e-alerts. What exactly have you gotten yourself into this
time?

I started TrueMajority in order to compound the power of all those who
believe in social justice, giving children a decent start in life, protecting
the environment, and America working in cooperation with the world community.
TrueMajority is endorsed by all the organizations listed at the end of this
email. And the amazing part is that it only takes 2 minutes a month and
it’s free. Here’s how it works:

1) We monitor what’s going on in Washington based on the following principles:
1) Attack world poverty and hunger as if our life depends on it.
It does.
2) Champion the rights of every child, woman and man.
3) End our obstructionism to the world’s treaties.
4) Reduce our dependence on oil and lead the world to an age of
renewable energy.
5) Close the book on the Cold War and end the nuclear nightmare
forever.
6) Renounce Star Wars and the militarization of space.
7) Make globalization work for, not against, working people.
8) Ensure equal treatment under law for all.
9) Get money out of politics.
10) Close the gap between rich and poor kids at home.

2) When your voice counts we send you a short email alert that explains
the situation.

3) If you choose to send a fax to your Congresspeople you can just send
the email back to us. We put a unique code in each subject line that looks
like this “SEND ACTION~a5800u66260″. When you send the email back to us
by hitting reply, our computer reads the code and knows it is from you.
We then generate a fax from you to your Congresspeople. That’s it.

There are over 50 million of us that share these concerns but we’ve ended
up fragmenting ourselves because each of us can only concentrate on one
or two issues. Or for some of us we’ve just felt powerless. The TrueMajority
can unite us into a force that is even more powerful than the Christian
Right or the NRA.

So I hope that you will respond to TrueMajority e-alerts when they come
your way. And if you like our stuff, that you’ll forward it on to your friends.

Thanks for helping,
Ben Cohen

It sounds like a good idea. I mean, how cool is it to be able to fax your Congressperson on issues that matter to you with so little personal effort?

But on the other hand — how seriously will your Congressperson take a fax that was generated with so little personal effort? I have to wonder if automatically-generated faxes can have any impact at all, when even massive protests failed to derail the war on Iraq.

Color me grumpy today, I guess.

You know, at least I’m trying, is what I’m thinking. It’s a step in the right direction.

My beef with this is it all sounds good, but saying this is what’s wrong is useless. Until someone says this is what’s wrong and this is how to fix it I won’t be bothered to listen.

1-1) I agree with the sentiment, but I’m curious as to how he’d support the statement. How does my life depend on saving those starving elsewhere in the world? Nothing closes my ears faster than unsupported hyperbole.

1-2) Ok, championing can mean many things, most of them ineffective.

1-3) If we’re not signatories then we’re not obstructing. I presume this means Kyoto which is being obstructed by many countries and which Clinton signed but was never ratified. Actually didn’t even come close to ratification by either party.

1-4) Well yeah, but again, how? Also easier said than done.

1-5) What does that mean? It’s very vague.

1-6) So if we do does that mean Russia and China will too? Unless that happens, I could never support this.

    1-7) How?

    1-8) Absolutely. How?

    1-9) “You may saaaay I’m a dreamer…”

1-10) That’s just poorly written. Just close the gap between the kids? Even as stated I don’t necessarily agree with the idea. I’m assuming he’s talking about equality in education and opportunities, which isn’t only about money.

Doesn’t seem like they’re doing much of anything. Just sending emails out when certain things come up for a vote. When Ben starts drawing up bills with his representative, then I’ll pay attention.

When I went to Washington, D.C. in college, we were told that one personal letter is usually thought to represent the voices of about 100 people. I think that’s what we were told– it’s a similar number at any rate. I have a feeling it is far more effective to actually write or call than it is to email or join online groups. It means you’re involved and that’s a huge step, but writing is probably more effective.
