another New Faces Review
December 31st 2003 at 1:03 am
A variety of promising new authors are collected in “New Voices in Science Fiction,’ edited by Mike Resnick (DAW, 351 pages, $6.99). The broad scope of these 20 original stories range from Jewish vampires to a post-human wedding farce.
Some of the authors, such as Kage Baker, Julie Czerneda and Susan Matthews, already have had considerable success publishing novels. James van Pelt and Michael Burstein have become major names in short fiction in the past decade. Janis Ian is famous as a songwriter and has been building a second career in fiction. There were other names I wasn’t familiar with, and one disappointment I had with the book was the lack of information on what and where the authors have published previously.
My three favorite stories showcase the differing approaches. In “Four-Eyes,’ by Tobias Buckell, a St. Thomas taxi driver confronts ghosts and computerized obeah magic. “Different Worlds’ by van Pelt is a story of survival after an alien invasion. “Flowers from Alice,’ by Cory Doctorow and Charles Strauss, is an amusing story of an extravagant wedding gift in a future where sex changes can take place up to the wedding day.
