Some more thoughts about the CEOs of Lucent, Enron, and Worldcom:

One of the problems with old school USSR communism as I have read is the fact that once a person realizes that they will be paid no matter what their efforts, the society loses efficacy and desire to work real hard. Why work hard if you’re always going to get the same result, whether your work at 10% or 90%.

Each of these large companies has created an uber-class of management that is not really held responsible to the reality of the world around them. Even as these companies come crashing down none of that applies to the CEOs, they’re getting perks no matter what.

Communism, from each according to their ability, to each their needs.
Lucent: from each CEO whatever they can, to each lots of money so they can fulfill their needs.

Aside from the parallels the other problem is sheer size and momentum of these corporations, run in a centralized top-down manner. They can’t be efficient, they’re slow to respond.

I say let them die. Auction off the pieces to smaller nimbler companies. Decentralize. Diversify or die.

Will that happen? I’m waiting for government bailouts. Hell, how free-market/capitalist is a country when our tax dollars support these mega-companies in so many different ways?

Fast Food restaurants claim federal unemployment training money. SBA grants for small individual businesses are taken over by franchises. Mega airlines, with the exception of Southwest, are getting billions in aid (but have the politburo CEOs taken a dip in their pay while they say they’re about to go under, hell no, they’re making more).

Am I against the rich. No. I’m not some liberal hippy who damns them. What I’m pissed off about is that my tax dollars are paying for some of these people’s gross mistakes, and subsidizing bad business. I already pay for their products, am subjected to their advertising. Enough is enough.

/end rant/
