The edge of this mid-west
January 31st 2002 at 6:50 am
The edge of this mid-west winter storm coming through is near where I live. We’re getting medium (2-3 inches) freezing rain, some hail, slightly slippery roads. And so on. Tonight I drove home from work carefully, keeping the Celica in fourth gear so I wouldn’t unconsciously go much faster than 50, and I kept trying to peer far down the road for patches of water or deer.As a result, I didn’t notice the moving mailbox until I passed her. A woman in a leather jacket with those fringes hanging from the bottom of her arms. She had her hand out, palm up, and until I passed alongside her, my mind classified her as a larger than normal mailbox.I was going to stop, but I saw another car behind me. So I didn’t. It was wet, I’d already skidded a few feet on an earlier sudden stop, and I was already past her. Plus, it was just outside a major enough town she wasn’t more that 1/4mile from a payphone and the police station. So I kept going. It looked like the car behind me picked her up.Nonetheless, I could help feeling bad for someone standing out in 30 degree weather, a little bit of hail, and rain rain rain. I didn’t see a car anywhere near her, so it was a strange looking thing, to be alone at 1:00am in the dark and rain, standing out there, in rank and file with all the other mailboxes. In other more pertinent news I wrote 580 words tonight.
